Q: What is Opera?
A: Opera is a browser. Similar to other browsers like Netscape,
Mosaic, Internet Explorer, Amaya, and Konquerer.

Q: What is different about Opera?
A: Opera uses one main window to contain multiple webpages. While you
functionally max out other browsers after a few open webpage
windows, Opera allows you to open dozens upon hundreds of sites and
   not clutter your task bar.

But, not to be out done by the mono-window browsers, Opera 6 now
offers a SDI (single/slow document mode interface) option. If
that's not enough, you can even open window within this new SDI
mode with Alt-Shift-Click. That's enough options to satisfy even
   the most discriminating user.

Q: Is Opera really faster?
A: On the fastest available machines, Opera is just a little bit ahead
of other browsers for load speed. When you get on aging systems
(say a 233mhz with 32meg of ram), Opera leaves the competition in
   the dust.

Opera 6 raises the ante even more. Opera 6 is 20-25% faster at
   loading pages on most systems.

Part of the Opera speed boost is not so much from raw page display
speed, but in usability. You can easily surf most sites three to
five times as fast with Opera. Opera's ability to
"shift-control-click" a link into background loading while you read
in the foreground, "blows the doors off" mono-window browsers like
   IE and Netscape.

Q: Does Opera support all the advanced protocols, standards, and
   secure sites?
A: Yes, completely. Opera is HTML 4 and CSS2 compliant. It supports
128bit encryption and 3 leading security protocols. Opera has been
cited many times for it's close adherence to W3C
   standards:
   http://www.opera.com/opera5/specs.html

Q: Does Opera support Java?
A: The java version of Opera includes Java by Sun Microsystems
   (inventors of Java).

Q: Is Opera available in other languages?
A: Yes, there are over a dozen and growing languages available.
Additionally, Opera supports "plugin" language packs so a user can
translate Opera into any language they choose.

Q: Can I use it for email and usenet reading too?
A: Yes. There are full featured email and news programs included.

Q: Is Opera available for any other operating system besides windows?
A: Yes. Linux, BeOs, Epoc, Psion, Mac, Windows 98/95/Me/2000/Net and
growing. There is also an older, but outstanding version of Opera
   3.62 available for Windows 3.1.
   http://www.opera.com

Q: Is it ok to use the free version for an extended time?
A: Certainly.

Q: Do the ads go away after I've registered?
A: Yes.

Q: Are there any sites that don't work with Opera?
A: Some sites that are specifically written for other browsers. These
are few and far between. They are mainly relegated to other browser
   manufactures sites and their minions.

Q: I'm behind an intranet firewall - will Opera work with my proxy
   server?
A: Yes.

Q: Is there more info for new Opera users?
A: Try Opera's intro
   pages:
   http://www.opera.com/support/Intro.html

The help files within Opera also have a wealth of information
   (F1).

Q: What does "Validate Page" mean?
A: Opera will send the current page to the W3C page validation utility
to validate (check the syntax) of the page. Website authors can use
the option to check their pages for compliance to html and css
   standards.

If you are having a problem with a website, before assuming it a
browser problem, please "validate the page" and see if there are
errors. If there are no errors, then it is an Opera problem and
should be reported. If there are errors, you can often email the
webmaster the validation report to show them and mention that their
   site caused your browser problems.

You can validate a page by using the right click/frame/Validate
HTML menu, or with Ctrl-M,F,H with the keyboard. There is also a
bookmarklet for page validation available here:

   http://www.esatclear.ie/~phiznlil/bookmarklets.html

Q: What are all the buttons and widgets for on screen?
A: Moved to stand alone page because of size.
This is specifically for Opera 5, but much of it is still
   applicable for Opera
   6:

   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/screen_objects.htm

   Some interesting
   recommendations:
   http://www.kgc.cc/activities/computer/opera.htm

Q: Is Opera difficult to install?
A: Not at all. Opera is one of the more "clean" installing programs we
know about. It changes only a few registry settings and is self
contained in it's own disk directory.

Q: So many ways to configure. What are the old pro's using for
   configurations?
A: You are correct in that there are many different configurations you
can use. The one thing we constantly relearn in the Opera browser
community, is no two people use it the same. Every time we use a
feature some way that seems natural to us -- we assume everyone
else must be doing the same -- 95% of the time we are wrong.

The best I could do are some very broad generalizations:
   - many put the url address bar at the bottom of windows
   (menu-view-address bar-bottom).
   - many folks use shift-control-click habitually on almost all
   links.
   - older users tend to love MDI and get used to the mdi keyboard
   commands (control-tab, shift-control-tab).
   - many of the more advanced users shun the news and email
clients by removing them (see the email section).
   - tend to use more keyboard commands. Especially those on the
left hand (z,x, and the tab'ers).
   - tend to use their own css file.
   - often run with graphics off or habitually use the G key to
   toggle graphics.
   - many have animations turned off and other "noise" makers.
   - tend to use customized buttons and skin files.
   - tend to distrust anyone discussing removing MDI from
   Opera.
   - basically, everyone does their own thing that suits their
tastes - this a major reason we use Opera.

[ Look and Layout ]
Q: What are the "special buttons" for in the Opera buttons.ini file?
A: Moved to a stand alone
   page:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/custom_buttons.htm

Q: Where are the paths for my Prefs-Browser-Look Button Sets drop down
   menu located.
A: Check your Opera directory for a file named buttons.dat.

Q: What does the option "show progress inside of address bar do"?
A: This is the default opera progress bar behavior. If you uncheck
this option, then progress information will be displayed as a small
   "popup" style graphic.

The only value is to give you a progress bar in full screen mode.
Oh, it also will give you access to the url bar while a page is
   being loaded.

Q: Where can I find Opera Button sets?
A: http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/

Q: How do I switch off the Popup Status bar?
A: In Prefs under toolbars. Check "show progress bar inside of address
   bar".

Q: Do I have to close Opera and re-start it every time I make a
   change to "buttons.ini"?
A: No. Just go to Prefs (Alt-p), Toolbars, and toggle "colored
buttons" and select apply. Do that twice. You can keep the dialog
open and do this until you like what you see.

Q: Where did my save icon go?
A: Room had to be made at the right of the toolbar for the banner
displays in the Free version. Several Icons including Save had to
be turned off in the default. Your old Opera 4 "buttons.ini" file
codes are still valid. Simply replace the entire "[Main Button
Bar]" section in the new "buttons.ini" with the one from your old
   file. Example:

   [Main Button Bar]
Version = 1 # Version, this must be not equal 0
   Button 0 = 1;1;10000;3 # New
   Button 1 = 1;0;10001;0 # Open
   Button 2 = 1;0;10002;3 # Save
   Button 3 = 1;1;10004;0 # Print
   Button 4 = 1;0;10009;0 # Copy
   Button 5 = 1;0;10227;3 # Find
   Button 6 = 1;1;13010;0 # Toggle hotlist
   Button 7 = 1;0;13011;3 # Fullscreen
   Button 8 = 1;1;10032;0 # Back
   Button 9 = 1;1;10056;0 # Reload
   Button 10 = 1;1;10031;3 # Forward
   Button 11 = 1;1;10072;0 # Home
   Button 12 = 1;0;10059;0 # Goto
   Button 13 = 1;0;10052;3 # Active bookmark folder
   Button 14 = 1;0;10019;0 # Tile
   Button 15 = 1;0;10018;0 # Cascade

A few names have changed, and the Previous and Next buttons (now
Back and Forward) have drop-down lists; but otherwise, they're the
   same buttons. (Coises)

   Custom Buttons in Opera
   5:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/custom_buttons.htm

   Button ID
   numbers:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/buttonids.htm

Q: Where is the "direct url access" button that was in Opera 4?
A: Add the following to the [Main Button Bar] section of your
   buttons.ini:

   Button xx = 1;1;10059;12 # Open diradr

Where xx is the number to put it where you want in the sequence.
   (Josef W. Segur)

Q: How do I move the "Back" Button to where the "New" Button is at?
A: A touch involved for the novice, but doable if you are comfortable
   editing a text file:

Open your buttons.ini in a text editor (notepad).
About half way down the file, you'll find a section:
   [Main Button Bar]
It will have a dozen or so entries like:

   Button 0 = 1;1;10000;3 # New

The 10000 is the button id. To swap two buttons, exchange their
   "ids".

   Button 8 = 1;1;10032;0 # Prev

In the example, you'd exchange 10032 in button 8 with the 10000
in button 0. (save a backup copy of buttons.ini before you edit
   it).

   Bunch of buttons
   info:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/buttons/

Q: What are all the button ids in buttons.ini?
A: We don't know them all, but here are a few more. We have no idea of
the long term usage effect of these.

   1;1;12024;0 # Prev Mail
   1;1;12025;6 # Next Mail
   1;1;12026;0 # Reply
   1;1;12027;6 # Reply All
   1;1;12028;2 # Forward email
   1;1;12029;2 # Redirect email
   1;1;12030;2 # Compose email

Also see the section on special buttons below.

Q: How can I reduce the Window bar icon size?
A: In the active BUTTONS.INI file you are using, change the
   lines:

   [WINDOWBAR]
   Width = 21
   Height = 19
   Border = 0

   to read:

   [WINDOWBAR]
   Width = 0
   Height = 0
   Border = 0

The icons will be gone and the Window bar will thin to the minimum
height needed for the font used for buttons. You may set the font
used in toolbars and the URL address bar by in: Preferences -
Toolbars - Fonts &; Colors - Normal Text option.

Q: How do you get rid of the 'Go' and 'Search' buttons on the Progress
   Bar?
A: Go to Prefs Browser Layout, and uncheck the options for "show go
   button" and "show search field".

Q: How do I install new buttons in Opera 5?
A: Moved to stand alone page because of
   size:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/buttons_help.htm

Q: Did the buttons.ini change in Opera 6?
A: Only it's location and a few of the layouts. You can still use your
   old buttons.ini file.

Q: How do I select modes after I've used "don't show this again" on
   the startup dialog?
A: The option is also available in Preferences under Windows, "Show
   windows inside of workspace".

Q: Are my old Opera 5 button sets usable?
A: Yes. Use them same as you did with Opera 5.

Q: How do I open a new "page tab" in SDI mode?
A: Use Alt instead of Control.
   Alt-shift-click and Alt-click.

Q: How do I turn off that annoying window switching menu?
A: From preferences Accessibility and "Cycle windows". Select "without
   showing list".

Q: Buttons: Can I now edit the little icons when creating custom
   button sets?
A: Yes. They are stored in the "buttons\standard\icons" directory.

Q: Is there a menu-bar button for "create a new document window"?
A: Set your button bar to FULL.
Right click on the button bar and select "full" or go main
   menu-view-button bar-full.

Or, double click on a blank spot on the window bar. Or double
click on a blank spot on the app space (all windows minimized).

Q: Where did my window "tabs" go?
A: In MDI mode? If you lose the window bar, turn it on from the
   "view-window bar" menu.

Q: What is the "button id" for the direct addressing button?
A: It was removed. Don't know why, but it is no longer available.

Q: How do I get rid of tabs and get back the window bar buttons?
A: Switch to MDI mode on startup. If you have disabled the startup
prompt, you can re-enable it from Preferences-Start and Exit-Show
   startup dialog.

Q: How do I get rid of the text below buttons?
A: See the Browser Layou section of Preferences (alt-P)

[ Caching ]
Q: How do I empty the cache?
A: Prefs, Cache, Empty cache. You may also delete all the files in
your Opera\cache directory; however, this will not update the
visited links file and your links will not be marked as visited.

Q: What should I set for a cache size on the cache preferences dialog?
A: It is a very system and user dependant setting. Start with the
Opera defaults, and increase or decrease as time goes by. If you
have a really fast system with fast hard drives and mega memory,
try bumping the cache up to 20+ meg. I've run the full range from
small caches to huge (100meg+) caches, but tend to stay in the
under 10meg range. It may help system performance to uncheck "auto
ram cache" and set a specific amount. Opera will still use as much
memory as it requires, but "auto ram cache" is quite aggressive at
allocating memory - so it may help to uncheck the box on slower or
   ram challenged systems.

With a very large cache, you may notice a slow down at Opera
startup or shutdown as Opera clears and manages the cache files.

Q: What can I do to speedup startup or shutdown? Is it cache related?
A: Large slow downs at start and exit seem to be mostly related to
large url history, and visited links lists. If you turn down the
"number of days to mark links visited", Opera will be a bit faster.
These large databases of visited links and history lists take a
great deal of time to cross reference with the files in the cache.
You can find the setting for visited links buried deep within
preferences under Documents - Link presentation - Mark visited
   links for

Q: I lost my ability to go forward and backward!
A: Check your prefs-history and make sure it is greater than 0.

Q: What should I set my cache at?
A: We hear from people that there is a very wide range of settings.
The system defaults seem to work good for most people. When
changing cache parameters (Prefs - History/Cache), you should keep
   the following in mind:

   - Enabling automatic ram cache will allow Opera to use a larger
amount of RAM memory. If you have less than 64meg of ram, it is
probably best to turn this option OFF and manually set your ram
   cache size by hand.
   - Large disk cache's will affect Opera's startup speed. Opera
"collates" the disk cache on startup. It also writes and updates
   cache overview files on exit.
   - Large "history" numbers will also effect startup speed.
   - If you have a fast hard drive and a moderate amount of ram
(64meg or less), set your RAM Cache at 2meg (2000) for both
   documents and images.
   - If you have a large fast system with ram, disk, and cpu
performance to spare, don't be afraid to run your disk cache up to
   a hundred meg or more.
   - If you frequent sites with often updated data, it may help to
check "check modified" to "always" for documents. Otherwise, set
all three (docs, images, other) to "never" to speed up Opera. If
set to "never", you'll find that Opera is much more responsive, but
you will need to press reload to get a fresh copy of stale pages
that are loaded out of the cache.
   - Uncheck "always check redirects" for both docs and images.

Q: What is "use cookies to trace passwords"?
A: The default behavior of Opera's cache for HTTP and HTTPS URLS are
   as follows:

   1. https: pages are not cached for the next session, they are
   deleted on exit.
   2. pages accessed using HTTP authentication (popup boxes) are not
cached for the next session (this includes http: pages)
   3. Pages served as the result of a form with a password entry
field are not cached for the next session
4 Pages served as the result of a POST form is not cached for
   the next session.

Category 2, 3 and 4 are not added to the global history, and category 2
and 3 are not stored in the saved windows history, which is does
not contain any entries from and including the first category 2 or
   3 document.

What "use cookies to trace password protected documents" does is to
tag each cookie set by pages in category 2 and 3. Each time such a
cookie is used when retrieving a document, the document is tagged
as a password protected document (and added to category 3). Any
cookies set by such documents are tagged. And so on.

The effect is that no history traces of your password protected
surfing are kept, and all the cached documents you visited are
deleted at the end of the session.

A side effect of this feature is that if you for example have
activated the Amazon One-click feature all the book entry pages you
have visited will not be cached, or listed in the global
   history.

This feature will not work if the password is entered into a
Non-HTML form such as forms set up by a Java applet or a
   plugin.

Please note that the cookies are not deleted, except as issued by the
server. (-Yngve N. Pettersen, Opera Software)

Q: Why do some pages refuse to cache in Opera 6 like they did in Opera
   5, 4, and 3.62?
A: Opera 6 is aggressive at obeying Cache Control, and http EXPIRES
headers. More and more sites are becoming hyper retentive about
browser caching. Some larger sites that are dynamically generated
(creating web pages out of databases and intended to be updated
frequently) use various control headers to thwart browser
   caching.

   Solutions:
   a) A personal proxy server that removes all http headers
"expires" and any inbound header with the word "cache" in it. Those
in-the-know should get specific about the headers you filter (which
is beyond the scope of this FAQ)."
   b) Editing the opera binary and changing the word "expires" and
   the proper "cache" control headers.

see also: "Pages won't cache for me?"

Q: How do you move the cache to a different drive in Opera 5/6?
A: Add or edit your cache directory setting in the opera6.ini under
   the [User Prefs] section:

   CACHE DIRECTORY4=C:\Program Files\Opera\Cache4
Set the path where the new cache directory is located.

Q: Is there is a way to retrieve a window that has just been shut?
A: ALT-w, ALT-s, ALT-h.
Or Window, Special, History and select the page you were just
   at.

You can then create a link to that on your personal toolbar. Or,
create a webpage panel that is nothing but the history or cache
   settings.

Q: What is "Check Modified"?
A: Some servers report the file date of the file you are requesting.
Opera can check that date to see if there is a newer version. If
the version is newer on the server, Opera will redownload the file.
Many of us run set at "never" for all three options - this will
significantly speed up Opera over the long haul. The downside, is
that you will have to press your reload button to get a fresh copy
   of the page.

Q: Pages won't cache for me?
A: Are they cgi pages? Opera does not consider cgi pages (with ? in
url) to be fresh between sessions. (see http 1.1 spec section 13.9
   paragraph 2)

   ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2616.txt

[ Network ]
Q: I can't auto connect with Win 2000. Why?
A: The following may not work the first time. You may have to try
starting Opera and/or restarting W2K a few times, but eventually it
   takes hold.

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Start the
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, Remote Access Connection
Manager, and Telephony services, and set them all to Automatic
   startup.

Then go to Network and Dial-up Connections. Under Advanced in the
menubar, select Dial-up Preferences. Under the Autodial tab,
Enable autodial by location, check New Location (the current
location). Uncheck Always ask me before autodialing and Disable
autodial for the current session (until I log off).

Restart Windows. See if all the settings are the way you left them -
if not, change them again. Then try starting Opera - if it doesn't
succeed the first time, try a few more times. If it still doesn't
work, check all the settings *again* and try restarting Windows a
few more times. As I said, eventually it'll take hold. (-Jud
   Fink)

Q: How do I start Opera in Offline mode?
A: Close it in offline mode, and it starts in offline mode. Offline
mode is controlled by the INI option in [User Prefs]

   Offline Mode=1

You could make a separate profile for offline
   mode.

   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/profiles.htm

Q: Why does Opera just set there "waiting for connection" or "looking
   up host name".
A: It may be a DNS issue. Go to Preferences (ALT-p) and check
"Synchronous DNS". Most often occurs with Windows 95.

Q: Can I save multiple window states for different groups of pages?
A: Just save them under different names, set opera not to use them at
startup, and open your saved windows as desired.
   (-tranquilo)

Opera stores Window states (current pages and screen location) in
files ending in ".win". You may load a .win file from the File-Open
   command (CTRL-O). It is one of the more esoteric Opera features;
but many people use these types of stores windows as a small
bookmark style setup for their favorite page sets. You might try
creating a "Saved Windows" directory under your main Opera
directory just to save Window .win files. Then bookmark the
directories location. You can save the current window set from the
main menu bar "Window - Save All" command.

Q: How do I configure Opera to connect to the internet as needed?
A: This is an attribute/function of Dial-Up Networking (DUN), not the
   browser.

   Go to Control Panel
    - double click DUN (DialUp Networking)
    - right click your dialer (the one you are using)
    - select "Properties"
    - select Dialing tab
    - check "This is the default Internet connection"
    - select "Always dial my default connection"
    - select tab Security
    - check "Connect automatically"

This for Win/9x/me. Other systems may exhibit variations. (-Rod
   Davis)

Q: What is the "Size of Network Buffer" setting?
A: It determines how many bytes of data Opera will try to get from the
network connection, and subsequently feed into (e.g.) the HTML
   parser.

On a fast connection a larger buffer will mean that Opera's HTML
parser can chew the content in larger chunks, without the delays
reading several smaller chunks would lead to. The downside is that
larger portions can lead to a less responsive application, unless
you are running on a fast computer. (-Yngve Nysaeter Pettersen)

Q: If I set the max number of connections to a single server real
   high, will it help?
A: Not really. Many servers will actually disconnect on the additional
multiple requests. More than 4 to 6 is pushing it.

"We have observed a number of cases where an alleged HTTP 1.1
server is not able to handle pipelined requests (send several
requests before receiving results on the first), and closes the
connection. Opera is usually able to handle this..." (-Yngve
   Nysaeter Pettersen)

Q: If windows crashes during a download, can I still use Opera's
   Resume transfer mode?
A: Opera is quite able to resume a download that was interrupted
because Opera or your computer crashed, as long as the download.dat
file, which is updated each time a download starts or ends, got
   written to the disk properly.

The entries in the file will be there for 48 hours since the last
loading unless you remove them, and you can resume or restart the
download in that period. (-Yngve N. Pettersen)

Q: Why I can't connect to a website?
A: Double check the following: o DNS: if it is all websites, then
   enable synch DNS if off.
o Offline Mode: double check that you aren't in Offline mode
   (file-Work OffLine)
o Redirects: Make sure Redirects are enabled.
   (prefs-privacy-enable auto redirection)
o Proxy: Double check the settings if you are using a proxy.
   Does it work without?
    o Cookies: Turn them on.
o Referral Strings: you might have to enable this for a few
   specific sites. (prefs-privacy-enable referral logging).

Q: What happened to the Connections preferences?
A: Renamed to Network.

[ Cookies ]
Q: Where do I delete new cookies on exit?
A: Under preferences (ALT-p), Privacy, and check "Throw away new
   cookies on exit".
   (-Werner Brinkmann)

Q: How can I edit my cookies?
A: Use Josef Segur's freeware Opera File Explorer (highly
   recommended):
   http://westelcom.com/users/jsegur/

It allows you to edit individual cookies and other Opera data.

Q: Where are cookies stored?
A: \Opera6\cookies4.dat

Q: What does "do not accept third party cookies" mean?
A: If you are at "xyz.com" and a file or graphic is inserted from
elsewhere (such as a banner ad), those files may contain cookies
coming from other servers. Those are considered "third party"
cookies because they are not coming from "xyz.com". If you reject
third party cookies, most sites will still work properly, and it
   may speed up Opera.

Q: What are all the cookie and privacy preferences?
A: Moved to stand alone page due to
   size:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/privacy_security.htm

Q: Why do I get a "cookies not supported error"?
A: You need to double check your cookie preferences under
   privacy.
Make sure you are accepting cookies, and you may have to use the
"accept all cookies" option in order to use that particular
   site.

There are many sites that take liberties with the Netscape cookie
standard. However; almost all of these nonstandard sites and
servers have been pain staking addressed by Opera. The latest
version of Opera works across the Internet with 99.99% of the sites
   out there.

Sometimes sites will mistakenly think that because you are not using
another browser that yours doesn't support cookies. Please kindly
email the webmaster at the site and gently let them know that your
   browser does.

Lastly, you might be behind a firewall that blocks cookies, or you
have a proxy server that doesn't allow cookies. Double check the
   settings on that software.

Q: What cookie setting should I use to protect myself from web
   trackers?
A: Go to prefs (ALT-p) Cookies, and select "Only accept cookies for
the server" from the lower drop down. Now most of the nastier "web
bugs" can not track you from site to site.

Q: Opera won't remember my cookie password?
A: First, double check that cookies are enabled.
Second, enable "Use cookies to trace password protected documents"
   under Prefs-Privacy.
Third, Opera does not store your passwords to documents on disk like
other browsers. Some of those other browsers store your password as
   raw text.

Q: What is "use cookies to trace passwords"?
A: See section on History and Cache.

Q: Cookies: I used to lose cookies when I would crash. That still the
   case?
A: Opera now auto saves cookies every 5 minutes.

[ Cascading Style Sheets ]
Q: What level of CSS does Opera support?
A: Full description of Opera's css element support is available
   at:
   http://www.opera.com/support/resources/opera-css.html
   http://www.opera.com/opera5/specs.html#css

   Opera Tag Support
   Table:
   http://www.opera.com/support/docs/operatag.txt

Q: About CSR files.
A: In the Opera Styles directory is a file "csr.css". It stands for,
Compact Search Result; part of the experimentation with search
engines for v5.0. There will be more information available on it's
usage in the future. In the mean time, here are the details for
   reference:

   Parameters:
   q - "Query string"
   h - "number of Hits" (default 5)
   o - "search Offset" (default 0)
   v - "Verbosity", 0: no teaser, 1: ~80-bytes, 2: ~250-bytes, 3+:
   1k (default 0)
   p - "Pretty-print": indentation and line breaks (default 0)
c - "CDATA sections": use **![CDATA[ ]]** around the element's
   content (default 0)

The returned XML document uses the following elements and
   attributes:
rl - result list, attributter: t="total hits", o="search
   offset"
   r - result
   u - url
   h - heading/title
   t - teaser/abstract

(note: replace ** and ** with less than/greater than brackets above -
it's a data base issue with this faq.)

   (-Rijk van Geijtenbeek)

Q: What's all this fuss about Opera CSS Files?
A: One of the common themes in the news groups is that of people
wanting and needing more information on Opera's usage of Cascading
Style sheets. While there has not been a single redundant question
about them, there have been bits and pieces repeatedly come up. The
following is a collection of various tid bits from sundry
   sources:

   - Opera applies specific CSS files for many of its internal
displays. These CSS files are found in the \Opera5\Styles
   directory:

   Filename: Applied to:
   -----------------------
   cache.css Window - Special - Cache.
   wml.css WML files.
   im.css Instant (ICQ) messenger files.
   opf.css Open eBook Package File.
   dir.css Directories (c:)
   drives.css Drives (opera:drives)
   history.css Window - Special - History.
   plugins.css Window - Special - Plugins.
   email.css Inbound email.
   about.css Help - About Opera.
csr.css see "About CSR files" in this section.

In Opera 5.10, email.css is replaced
   by:
   mime.css
   mimehead.css

Q: Where can I find some default CSS files to mess around with?
A: Opera's W3C Core Styles repository at:
   http://www.opera.com/support/resources/core-css.html (-Sue Sims)

Q: Why doesn't my local style sheet "take"?
A: You need to press F5 (reload) twice. You may also adjust prefs,
history and cache, "check redirect" for "documents" as always.

Q: Does Opera support style in forms for search engine obfuscation?
A: Although, applying style to forms to hide them and then get them
indexed, is one of the hot search engine promotion tricks right
now, Opera does not support this type of form obfuscation. *sigh*
(and most Opera users - whether they know it or not - are thankful
that is doesn't support them - lets hope they don't)

Q: Where are the default Opera CSS files?
A: In the Opera\Styles directory.

Q: What are some cheap tricks I can use for local css files?
A: Good reading in Eric Meyers The CSS Anarchist's
   Cookbook:
   http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/javascript/2001/03/09/anarchist_2.html

[ Email ]
Q: Is there a spell checker for Opera 6 news, email, and web page
   forms?
A: Yes. The freeware All Purpose Spell Checker (APSC). However, the
paste action back into forms is not compatible with Opera 6. You
will need to copy the resulting checked document and manually paste
it back into the forum. Other than that, it works perfectly for
both the news/email compose window and also for web page
   forms.
   http://www.palware.com/apsc/index.html

Also now working with Opera 5 (I was unable to get it to work with
Opera 6) is Spell Check for Edit Boxes.

   http://www.quinion.com/mqa/spell.htm

You will need to edit the options for "rich edit" as
   follows:

   Copy %ec
   Select all ^{HOME}+^{END}
   Paste +{INSERT}

   (-Bill Hallman)

Q: I want to backup my contacts. Which file is it?
A: "contacts.adr" in the Opera directory.

Q: How do I import Netscape mail stuff?
A: Select File-Import-Email.

Q: I have a dozen email accounts, how do I walk through all of them?
A: Do you have a wheel mouse and Opera 5.1? Hold the mouse over the
accounts drop down menu (when not open, but highlighted) in the
email tab of the Hotlist and roll the wheel (you can also do the
   same with the cursor keys).

Q: How do I use Operamail with the new SMTP Authorization system?
A: Sending mail through Operamail's SMTP server works with fine
   Opera's e-mail client.

Operamail does use authentication now, but rather than direct "SMTP
authentication", you authenticate through the POP3 server before
sending mail. For a period of time after checking your mail, the
server will allow you to send.

So: If you want to send mail through Operamail's SMTP server,
authenticate through the POP3 server first. (-Hvard K. Moen
   Technical Service Consultant Opera Software)

Q: My email directory grows and grows. How do I shrink it?
A: Empty the trash and then "compress" the email account. Right click
on an email folder and select "compress".

Q: Can I "email a webpage" to someone?
A: Not at this time. No, but you can send them the URL by right
clicking and selecting "send link via email".

If you want to send the direct html, you can use this work
   around:
Press F3 to view the source of the page,
then Control-A in your editor to highlight the source,
then paste the source back into an email.

Q: I want to backup my email. Which file is it?
A: The entire \Mail directory under your \Opera directory. Also might
want to note that in the opera6.ini, there is a section that
describes where your mail directory is at:

   [Mail]
   Mail Root Directory=C:\Opera6\Mail

You can find your Account name in your Account.ini
   file.

   C:\Program files\Opera\Mail\<account>\Account.ini
   (-Rijk van Geijtenbeek)

Q: Where are the compose font, line length, and word wrap settings?
A: On the "outgoing" tab of the email account properties.

Q: How do I change the font and style of incoming email?
A: It requires editing the CSS files used by email. It is found in the
   \Opera6\Styles directory under "mime.css" and "mimehead.css".

Q: How do I use Operamail with the email client in Opera?
A: Set your mail servers at operamail.com (inbound and outbound).

Q: What are the proper ports for incoming and outgoing email?
A: Incoming POP3 is port 110. Outgoing SMTP is port 25.

Q: Does Opera support SMTP Authentication?
A: Opera 5.10 does.

Q: I would like to know if an address book is available for the Opera
   email client?
A: Hit F4 to open the hotlist and click on the "contacts" tab.
Contacts are used as your address book in Opera. (-Werner
   Brinkmann)

Q: How do I delete an email account?
A: Open the hotlist to the Email tab and select the account you wish
to delete. Right click on the account name in the folder tree.
One of the options on the popup is "Delete".

Q: What format are mail box files kept in?
A: The mailbox files Opera create are in the simple unix mbox format.
This means that you can import these .mbs files into many other
e-mail clients without too much work (Netscape uses more or less
   the same format). (-Johan Borg)

Q: I don't see a mono space font, so how do I know?
A: On Windows systems, these:
        Andale Mono
        Courier
        Courier New
        Fixedsys
        Lucida Console
        Monotype.com

are some common monospaced fonts. To test a particular font, set
some program to use the font in question, then type a line of five
capital "W" letters and a line of five periods, like
   this:
   WWWWW
   .....

If the periods line up under the W's it's fixed-pitch (aka
monospaced); if the W's stretch out and the periods pull together,
   it's variable-pitch (proportionally spaced). (-Coises)

Q: How do I use Opera's Email client as the default system client for
   email?
A: In any Windows Explorer-window, click "View", then "Folder
Options". In the dialog, select the "File Types"-tab. There, scroll
down to "URL:Mailto-Protocol". Mark it, then click "Edit" on the
side. If you see "open" in the "Actions"-window, mark it,then click
edit. (If not, click the "New"-button, and in the "Action"-field
   you write "open".)

From there you should be able to "Browse..." to find "Opera.exe" in
   your Opera-folder.

Double click it(or mark it, then click "open"). This brings back the
previous dialog. Click OK and Close throughout, and viola; you're
   done!

This way, if you come across a mailto: link in any browser, Opera
   will open.

Additionally, you can make a shortcut to Opera.exe that looks like
   this:

   "C:\Program Files\Opera\Opera.exe" mailto:

As you can see, I have added "mailto:" behind the address to
Opera.exe with a space in between.

This will make Opera open with the e-mail client ready to compose a
   letter.
   (-Tommy A. Olsen)

Q: How do I stop the delete confirmation?
A: From the email account properties. From the Email menu on the main
menu bar select "edit active account", or double click on the
account root of the email folder tree with the hotlist open. Then
select the Warning Tab and uncheck "Warn before deleting to trash".
There are several other options there that you can also take
   advantage of if you wish.

Q: How do I control what Opera does when I receive new email?
A: From the Email menu on the main menu bar select "edit active
account". Then select the incoming tab, and then edit the bottom
dialog section "notification when new email arrives" section.

   You may change between:
display message box that will prompt you.
open folder will open the inbox.
play sound that will play a sound when email arrives.

Q: Can you create sub-folders?
A: Sure. That's a great way to keep your info organized. Just open the
Hotlist to the Email tab, right click on the folder you wish to add
a folder under, and select new folder.

Q: How do I use OE when I click on a email link in Opera?
A: Go to prefs (alt-p), Email section. Then select use external
client and thing use the browse button "..." to find your Outlook
Express program. Often it is stored in "c:\Program FIles\Outlook
Express\msimn.exe". OE, requires a special string on the end of it
to specify the email address. So the full path to OE would look
   like:

   C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe /mailurl:mailto:%.

This is does not work with some version of OE.

Q: How do I use Netscape 4.x when I click on an email link in Opera?
A: Go to prefs (alt-p), email section. Then select use external
client and use the browse button "..." to find your Netscape
program. It is usually located in "c:\program
   files\netscape\communicator\program\netscape.exe". Netscape
requires a special string on the end of it to specify the address.
So the full path to Netscape would look like:

   c:\program files\netscape\communicator\program\netscape.exe mailto:%

or if used with a specific profile (only works if netscape is
closed first; if netscape is already open, it will use the active
   profile).

   c:\program files\netscape\communicator\program\netscape.exe
   -P"profile_name" mailto:%

Q: Email/News Encoding
A: When I choose UTF-8 as the charset and use 8bit characters in
news-headers the encoding is totally broken. (-Frank Schmitt)

Q: When I try to send an email from a "mailto" link on a web page I
   get an error?
A: Try
   this:
   http://www.opera.com/support/supsearch/supsearch.cgi?options=index&;;name=45

Q: How do I call Opera from OE when I click on links?
A: You can't - it is an acknowledged short coming in Outlook
   Express.

   http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q274/0/42.asp

Q: Why doesn't it send mail from the email menu?
A: You cannot use the "email" menu in Opera to check mail in an
external mail client. There is no integration with external mail
clients other than mailto links. (-tranquilo)

[ Opera Free Version ]
Q: Is it ok to use full screen presentation mode all the time?
A: We don't see why not. Familiarize yourself with the keyboard
shortcuts to turn on scroll bars, status bar, and progress bar.

Q: What about the advertising display system. Is it a privacy or
   security concern?
A: In an unprecedented move, Opera Software has fully disclosed the
banner ad protocol and system used in Opera 5.

   Opera's documentation:
   http://www.opera.com/privacy/
   http://www.opera.com/privacy/adinfo.html
   http://www.opera.com/opera5/ads.html

   Opera Ad Connection Protocol Detail:

   http://www.opera.com/opera5/acp.html

Opera Software has stated that Opera 5 contains no advertising code
by any one but Opera Software. Additionally; checks by Opera users
running various TCP/IP packet viewers (sniffers) has revealed that
the system works exactly as Opera has stated in the above
   documents.

(rave) Many people use Opera because of it's perfect track record of
security and privacy. In its history, Opera browser has never
suffered from a privacy or security bug or breach - not a single
one. We are confident that Opera Software would not compromise that
record. If anyone is going to get AdWare done right, Opera Software
would be the company to do so - by all accounts and information
available to us, they have done just that. (/rave)

For results from Frode Gill's packet sniffing reports, see
opera.general newsgroup on the 6th of December. The following is
   from opera.general on Dec 9, 2000:

"The only way Opera will implement ads is the right way. We have no
hidden agenda's and no other motive but to continue to grow our
userbase in a responsible way..." (Dean G. Kakridas, Manager of
   Strategic Alliances Opera Software)

Q: Do the ads adversely effect the speed all the time?
A: No. Ads are fetched from the server only once a week and stored in
the cache to be used throughout the week. This solution ensures
Opera's speed is maintained. (from: OS website)

Q: How do I remove the advertisements?
A: Register Opera.

Q: Can you reclaim the banner ad space once you've registered?
A: When you enter the registration # the ad goes away and you do get
   the space back.

Q: Why does Opera leave open connections when using the news reader?
A: That is the way of an offline newsreader.

Opera's newsreader is online, which means it will retrieve article
counts as you navigate the group tree, then the list of articles
when you select a group, and last, but not least retrieve the
   articles as you read them.

In such a scenario, persistent connections are better, because
one does not waste time and network resources to establish and take
down connections every few seconds. Idle connections to news
servers can, depending on the server, remain open for 10-20 minutes
(there are preferences available to shut down idle connections as
   they become idle).

BTW, frater mus, HTTP 1.1 connections are persistent, unless the
server (or client) decide otherwise, but they are usually not kept
open for more than 15-30 seconds due to server resource management,
and Opera closes them if they are idle for more than a minute or
two. (-Yngve N. Pettersen Developer Opera Software)

Q: Can I turn the ads back ON after registration?
A: In the Opera main directory, remove or rename the file:
   OUsr600.dat

Q: What are the advertising preferences for?
A: They help tailor the ads to your choices. People would rather see
ads that are interesting to them, than those that are completely
unrelated. At a minimum, set the preferred category.

[ General Opera 6 Issues ]
Q: How do I report a bug?
A: Visit the Opera.com website and fill out a bug report. Currently
   at: http://bugs.opera.no/bugreport.cgi

Q: Should I report a bug in the Opera news groups?
A: In the past, the opera.beta newsgroup has been used for this
purpose. Please read the opera.beta group before posting. By now,
most of the moderate to severe bugs have been exposed and reported
   in the Opera News groups.
If you question whether it is a bug or a configuration problem,
by-all-means ask away in the opera.general group.

Q: How do I view a directory in Opera?
A: Just type c: (or whatever drive letter) into Opera's address
window. You may also browse all drives with "opera:drives". Like
other Opera displays, the directory and drives displays also have
their own CSS files in the Styles directory. Filenames are dir.css,
   and drives.css respectively.

Q: Help! I lost my Help!
A: If you have this problem, it can be fixed by editing the opera6.ini
file under the [user prefs] section.

   Help Directory=C:\Program Files\Opera\Help

Q: What are all the available clickable objects on the screen?
A: For Opera 5: Moved to a stand alone page due to
   size:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/screen_objects.htm

Q: Can I use Opera with AOL?
A: Login to AOL, then minimize AOL, open Opera, and browse to your
hearts content. (- Michele C. Shea)

Q: What are the command line parameters for Opera?
A: Opera has yet to publish a dedicated Opera 6 Ini file. The
following is still applicable for Opera 6, but does not include the
   newer ini settings:

   At this
   site:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/command_line_switches.htm
   Opera's system admin
   page:
   http://www.opera.com/opera5/sysadmin.html

Q: May I distribute Opera free version from my site?
A: Please see the distribution page (link at bottom of
   page):
   http://www.opera.com/press/

   Also read the Partners
   Page:
   http://www.opera.com/commercial/index.html

Q: Opera crashed and the screen said the file webhdll.dll caused it.
   Why?
A: The file webhdll.dll is part of a program called WebHancer. It is
often part of other software. You need to deinstall the software
that installed webhdll.dll. The software authors say there is no
conflict with Opera, however many Opera users feel otherwise.
Contact the manufacturer of the software for more
   information.

You may also find the "plugins-ignore.ini" file in Opera 6 to be
of value. Load the file up in an editor and have a look. The format
is simple. "webhdll.dll" is included in the plugins ignore file by
   default.

Q: How do I get url name completion? I want foo.com when I type in
   just foo.
A: Prefs under Connections-Server Name Completion. Uncheck the Look
for local machine option and check the "try name completion using".
You can then put in your preferred start and url enders. Most will
want "www" as the first, and "com, org, net" as the ending. Change to
   suit your local requirements.

Q: How do I get Opera to start with the windows I exited with?
A: Preferences, Start and Exit.
Under Start, check "show saved windows".
   Under Exit, check "save windows".

Q: Where can I find sounds for Opera?
A: Opera sound
   archive:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/sounds.htm

Q: What is stored in .win files?
A: The current size, location, and url of the open windows when you
   use the "save windows" command.

Q: How can I get Help to show in the main window?
A: Well, you can't by default, but you can by bookmarking the help
   file location.
You can also make a custom button with the help file address on
   it.

Q: What does "permission denied" mean on a website?
A: Often it means a login is required to access the page. Sometimes a
popup dialog box will ask for a user name and password. Other
times, you'll just get the error from the site because you don't
   have some "magic" cookie.

Q: I hate Notepad, how do I change it when I view page source?
A: Go to Prefs (ALT-P) Paths, and edit the path to your preferred
   viewer.

Q: Can I "lock" the browser in a "showcase window display" mode for
   products?
A: Try kiosk mode. You start the browser with the command line switch
/k or /kioskMode. It is the same as:

/NoChangeFullScreen which disallows switching between fullscreen and
   normal.
/NoChangeMenu can't turn off menus (mainly for older versions of
   Opera)
/NoChangeButtons can't change the buttons from preferences.
/NoSysMenu can't get at the system menu in the top
   left.
   /NoMinMaxButtons can't resize mdi windows.
   /NoKeyboardShortcuts can't use kb shortcuts.

Q: How do I automatically open all links in new windows?
A: Can't be done automatically, but you can shift-click or
   shift-control-click.

If you have a mouse that allows you to custom define extra
buttons, define one as a shift-click.

Q: Translate text doesn't see to work on large pieces of text?
A: That is a limitation of the SysTrans/Lycos translator. You will
need to copy the url and paste it into the Lycos form box.

Q: How do I get the startup dialog back after using "don't show this
   again"?
A: Under preferences (Alt-p) Start and Exit: "Show startup dialog".

Q: I edited my ini, but nothing happened?
A: It is now stored under the filename "opera6.ini". (there was a
   switch for unicode purposes).

Q: "Quick prefs" - what's the point?
A: It is available from the keyboard on F12.

Q: How do I turn off the "double click" menu?
A: It is called the Hot Click menu. Toggle it from preferences
   "accessibility - Hotclick menu"

Q: What happened to clone window keyboard shortcut?
A: CTRL-ALT-N now Duplicates Window instead of CTRL-SHIFT-N.

Check the keyboard docs as there were a few other little changes
   necessary.

Q: How do I turn off the Validate Page prompt?
A: Under Security Preferences. Uncheck, "Ask before submitting page
   for validation"

Q: Where did the "insert name" etc go on the form context menu?
A: They now show the actual contents of the field instead of it's
   name.

Q: Why is the zoom factor carrying over between windows?
A: Windows now inherit the source windows settings. These include zoom
factor, user mode, and graphics modes. Use a mouse gesture instead
of shift click to reset to the preferences settings.

Q: I just pressed space and the page freaked? What happened?
A: The screen scrolled. The space bar now scrolls the screen when not
keyboard focused on a link or on a form element. Shift-space
reverse scrolls. This only works if not on a form box and no link
is currently highlighted from the keyboard.

Q: How do I get back the "save windows" option on exit?
A: Enable the Confirm on Exit dialog from Prefs-Start/Exit. Then
check the box on that page to Save windows. It's confusing, but it
   works. (-Tim Altman)

Q: Where did the "hotkey" short cuts go on the menu?
A: The main menu is now "skinned". If you press ALT once, they will
   show up.

You can try a different mode by using "Screen reader compatible
   menus" under Prefs Accessibility.

[ Hotlist, Personal Bar, & Bookmarks ]
Q: When and why do I need to save the Bookmark list?
A: The current list is saved by Opera on-the-fly as you create
bookmarks. You may want to save the current file to a different
directory for backup purposes. You should do this before installing
   a new release of Opera.

Opera 5.1 and higher now imports your current bookmark list into a
new "opera5.adr" file. It is the same format as the old one.

Q: What's the nickname option for when I choose to bookmark a site?
A: It is a shortcut. Add a nickname to any bookmark, then "shift-f2"
and the character you selected, to instantly go to that bookmark.
You may also do longer nickname words by using the normal "f2"
direct addressing window to visit the bookmarked site.

Q: Can I change the font for the bookmarks?
A: Yes. Under preferences, Browser Look, Hotlist font.

Q: Can I bookmark a windows .win storage file to use for Sessions?
A: Moved response to a stand alone
   page:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/winfile_bookmarking.htm

Q: How do I open Bookmark's into new windows?
A: Go to preferences (ALT-P) to Windows and check open bookmarks in
   new window.

Q: How do I undock and redock the Hotlist?
A: From the menus, choose 'View/Hotlist/Docked' or
   'View/Hotlist/Floating'. (Rijk van Geijtenbeek)
You may also right click on the space between the word Contacts
and the X that closes the Hotlist. The context menu has "docked" or
"floating" on it. If in floating mode, use the window menu (top
left of the MDI window) to select "docked".

(you can not redock the Hotlist in SDI mode)

Q: Is there any way to import my bookmarks (favorites) from IE5?
A: Open the Hotlist (F4 or toolbar button). Right click on a folder
and select FILE then select "Insert Internet Explorer Favorites".
You can also use a bookmark manager, such as the freeware Columbine
Bookmark Merge, which is available at
   http://www.clark.net/pub/garyc.

Q: How do I import or insert Netscape bookmarks?
A: Main menu bar, File, then Import, and then Netscape Bookmarks.

Q: Why are my bookmark links opening a new window?
A: Go to preferences (ALT-p), then Windows and toggle, "reuse existing
   windows".

Q: Where are bookmarks stored?
A: Bookmark files are stored in files ending in ".adr". The default
Opera bookmark file is stored in "Opera.adr". The opera6.ini file
contains the current address book file used. For example:

   [USER PREFS]
   HOT LIST FILE VER2=C:\Program Files\Opera6\opera5.adr

You can edit the Hotlist in any text editor. Please be careful to
study the format and keep it the same.

Q: How do I switch to a new bookmark file?
A: Open your bookmarks (F4). Right click on any folder. Then select
"file" and then "File" and "open". Browse to the bookmark file you
   wish to open.

If you just wish to create a new bookmark file, then put in a
filename that doesn't exist and it will be created.

Q: How do I combine bookmark files?
A: Open your bookmark (F4). Right click on any folder or the root
folder. Select "file" then "insert file" and browse to the bookmark
file. They will be inserted inside the folder that is active. It is
probably best to make a new folder and insert the bookmarks there.
For example, if you are inserting opera5.adr bookmarks into the
opera3.adr bookmarks, make a new folder in the opera3.adr bookmark
list and insert the opera5.adr list there. (tranquilo)

Q: How do I remove the bottom pane of the Hotlist and just use the top
   or the bottom?
A: This is the default in Opera 6. To switch, click on the Open
Hotlist (f4) View Menu, then select "show folder tree".

Q: How can I determine which bookmark file Opera is using?
A: Go to the Help menu and select About.
You will also find other great configuration information listed
   there:

   Preferences
   Saved windows
   Bookmarks
   Opera directory
   Cache
   Help documents
   Plugin path
   Version information
   Java
   Registration information

Q: Any tutorials on using the Hotlist or bookmarks?
A: For Opera 5, yes. (mostly still applicable for Opera 6)
   Road map to Opera 5
   Bookmarks:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/bookmark_primer.htm

Q: Is there a way to use Opera comparable to links bar in Netscape and
   IE?
A: YES! Opera 6 contains an all new personal bookmark
   toolbar!

   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/v6/personal_toolbar.htm

Q: What bookmark managers can import and export Opera bookmarks?
A: http://www.Manfred-Dahlhoff.de/JetLinks

Q: How do I set a custom web page panel?
A: - Visit the page you with to view as a panel.
   - Open the Hotlist (F4).
   - Right click on the Bookmarks tab.
   - Select "Add Panel".
   - Edit the title an url to suit.
   - All set.

Q: How do I turn OFF a web page panel?
A: Right click on the panel "tab" and select "show panels". Then
uncheck that panel name as listed. You can turn it back on again by
   doing the same.

You can also go to the View menu on the main menu bar and select
   Hotlist-Show Panels.

Q: How do I reload a custom web page panel?
A: Close and reopen the Hotlist. (f4)

Q: How do I get Custom Panel links to open in the main window?
A: Shift-Click.

Q: How many custom panels can I add?
A: 20.

Q: How do I put something on the Personal toolbar?
A: Grab the security icon of any page (it will change the pointer to
cross hairs). Then drag the icon over to the toolbar.
You can also drag from the Hotlist to the toolbar.
You can also edit the "personal toolbar" folder of the open
   Hotlist.

Q: How do I select which search options are shown on the personal
   toolbar?
A: Right click on the toolbar and select "show searches". Then
deselect or select the ones you want. Although it is a nice
feature, we have removed all the search options from our personal
toolbar. We'd rather have the toolbar space than the searches. It
is just as easy to press f8 to focus on the address bar and then
use the simple keyboard short cut such as "g opera skins" to do a
   search on Google.

Tip: the "find in page" option is the new "Inline find" option also
available from the Edit menu of the main menu bar.

Q: What do the new star icons next to the bookmarks mean?
A: Red is for visited, and blue is for unvisted.

Q: How do I know which folder the bookmark search found my bookmark
   in?
A: You can't directly. But if you have the folder tree open, you can
drag the link from the Find Results folder to a new one.

Q: How do I get the Hotlist back "inside" Opera in SDI mode?
A: We don't think you can. It must remain on the Desktop.

Q: Hey, where'd the Hotlist view preferences go?
A: They are now on the "view" drop down of the Hotlist.

Q: How do I set the Hotlist font?
A: Now located on the Browser Look preferences.

Q: How do I duplicate a bookmark?
A: Hold control when dragging and dropping. Works in the Hotlist as
well as on the personal toolbar.

Q: How do I rearrange my personal toolbar?
A: Just drag them around. Duplicate an entry by holding control while
   moving them.

Q: How do I get back the folder tree in the Hotlist?
A: From the Hotlist "view" menu select "view folder tree".

Q: Is there a way for custom bookmark order?
A: In 5.x you could select custom order for the bookmarks (three
lines) and then drag the entries around using the <alt> key.
In 6.0 this causes a copy of the selected entry to be appended at
the end of the list. (-Martin)

Q: Where do I turn back on the personal toolbar?
A: Main menu - View - Personal bar - and use the on/off toggle.

   Also try:

Shift+F7, which sets focus to the search-field, will open the Personal
bar if it is hidden. Can't make up my mind if that is a bug or a
   feature. (-Frode Gill)

Q: The Hotlist stays open even after I close Opera in SDI mode?
A: Yes. Yes it does. A known bug/feature. It only affects SDI mode -
   so don't do that.

Q: I lost my characters in bookmarks when importing them!?
A: Did you use File-Import? The bookmark files have a different
encoding because of Unicode. But if you install O6 on top of 05,
the bookmarks will be converted by Opera. (-Samuli
   Lintula)
   http://www.samulilintula.net/netti/operavukk.php

Q: Bookmarks to personal bar and bar to bookmarks inconsistent?
A: Dragging bookmarks from the Hotlist to the personal folder removes
them from the Hotlist, but dragging them from the personal folder
to the Hotlist leaves them in the personal folder. That's
   inconsistent behavior. (-Christian Wagner)

Q: Bookmarks: How do I "merge" Opera bookmark files?
A: Open the hotlist, right-click/folder/new/folder name ->
   opera6.
   Open the opera6 bookmark folder.
   Right-click, file/insert bookmarks/navigate to your opera6.adr file,
and it should be inserted in the opera6 bookmark folder.

To just change between the different adr files, right click on
the hotlist, file/open, and select an adr file to use.
Unfortunately its not as simple as clicking on a link. (-tranquilo)

Q: How do I put something on the Personal Links Bar?
A: Make a new folder in your bookmarks, copy the links you want to see
in the 'Personal bar' in it, then right-click in the folder and
choose 'Show on Personal bar'. (-Rijk van Geijtenbeek)

Q: How do I search my bookmarks?
A: Make sure the "find" (f4, view, show find) is enabled. Then just
type in the text you are searching for. You can search urls, titls,
   nicknames, and descriptions.

[ Messenger ]
Q: Can I change the default (away, invisible..etc) messages?
A: You can if you use an Opera Language file. Just install the .lng
file in your Opera directory and edit the messages. Find your
   language file at:
   http://www.opera.com/opera5/localization.html

Q: How do I the messenger, it is quite different from what I am used
   to.
A: First, create an account with ICQ.
Go to Messaging and then New Account and fill out the questions
   (name, password, etc).

If you already have an old ICQ account, then select the "use
   existing instant messaging account".

To add a contact, select Find Contact and enter their user
   ID#/UIN in the address field.

Q: Does Opera Messenger work with AOL AIM?
A: No, Opera's messenger is based on ICQ.

Q: How can I tell when someone is online?
A: You must first do Messaging-Find User to add users. Then, if they
authorize you, you can tell they are online if you can send them a
message. If no users are online, you will not be able to choose
Messaging then Connected Users. Or, you can just have your Hotlist
open to your Contacts at all times and their icon will become a
yellow lightning bolt when they are online." (Timothy L. Miller)

Q: Word wrap in the messenger isn't working right!?
A: Upgrade to 5.01 or higher.
Or if using 5.0: In your \Opera5\Styles directory (where Opera5
is your path to Opera), there is a file called im.css. Open that
file in a text editor (Maybe Notepad) and change:

   white-space: pre;
   to the following:
   /* white-space: pre; */

You may also download a new style sheet from Opera at:
   http://www.opera.com/stylesheets/support/im.css

Q: How do I setup and existing ICQ account?
A: Under Messaging, New Account, select the option to use existing
instant messaging address and add your ICQ UIN to the address field
of the set up dialog which follows.

Q: How do I change the ICQ server?
A: Exit/close Opera if it is running.
   Edit your opera6.ini (usually c:\program files\Opera
   5\opera6.ini)
Find the [Messaging] section and change the line:

   Server 1=icq.mirabilis.com

To another server such as icq1.mirabilis.com or
   icq3.mirabilis.com.

Restart Opera and connect to ICQ.

Q: Can I import my current ICQ contacts into Opera?
A: Not at this time.

Q: Can I add linebreaks in my messages?
A: Yes. By pushing Ctrl-Enter you can add a linebreak in the message.
This way you can divide your message in paragraphs. (-Mark Schenk)

Q: Can I turn off the messenger?
A: Yes, from Prefs in Opera 6 under Programs and Paths.

[ Mice, Pointers, & Clicks ]
Q: How do I use "mouse gestures" in Opera 5-6?
A: Mouse gestures work by right click (and holding) down the right (or
secondary) mouse button then sliding the mouse.

   Mouse Movement: Action
Down : Open new document (if done over a link, opens link document
   in new window)
Reload : Move up and down
Restore or maximize window : Up, then right
   Minimize: Down, then left
Duplicate window (if done over a link, opens link document in
   background) : Move down, up
Close document : Move right-left-right-left : or down, then
   right
Up a directory : Move up, then left (same as control-backspace)
   (Opera 6 only)

To turn off all this nonstandard noise, deselect the option in
   Preference under accessibility.

Q: Where is the option to return to Opera's previous faster mouse
   behavior?
A: There isn't one. Limited work arounds: If you have a 3 or 4 button
mouse, define one of the buttons as a double click via it's mouse
properties. It will get you "single shot" links, but not the right
context menu. The right context menu can also be opened from
   CONTROL-M.

Q: Can I use the 3rd and 4th button of certain mice?
A: Not all mice conform to various standards. Some intentionally use
non-standard methods. Those that do, will not work. Logitech
Optical Wheel mice are working good with Opera. Tip: hold control
on your wheel mouse and roll the wheel.

Q: Mouse gesture - Open a link in the background?
A: Yes. It was undocumented in Opera 5. It is also the most powerful
   mouse gesture.

While over a link, right click, pull down just a little bit, and
then backup just a little bit, and release. The link opens in the
background! It takes a little practice - you need to remain over
the link while going down and up, but it is such a time saver and
   the only gesture I use.

Q: What are the mouse-keyboard combos?
A: These are the heart and soul of Opera:
Shift-Control-Click = open link in background.
Shift-Click = open link in foreground.

Get used to using them - they are the greatest surfing time saver
ever invented. They are what make Opera faster to use than any
   other browser available.

Once you get the hang of the above, use "control tab" and
"control-shift-tab" to cycle through the open windows.

In SDI mode (windows open outside of Opera), use Alt instead of
   Control.

Q: What are mouse gestures?
A: They allow you to do gymnastics with the mouse instead of using the
keyboard or menu. They work in conjunction with the right mouse
button (by default). You press and hold the right mouse button and
   "draw" on the screen.

See "mouse" under the Opera help window for a complete list of
   supported gestures.

Q: My mouse gesture for "back" no longer works?
A: You could be stumbling into the new (undocumented) "up directory"
mouse gesture. Up and LEFT is the same as the Control-backspace to
   move up a directory.

Q: Mouse: Mouse gestures don't work over the Flash menu here?
A: Mouse gestures will not work when over "plugin" generated content.
In this case, it is the Flash based menu. You'll run into this on
other sites from time-to-time. Short of rewriting Flash, this is
   out of Opera's hands.

[ Usenet and News ]
Q: How do I show threads expanded in newsgroups?
A: Go to Prefs, News and under "group threads", uncheck "open all".
   (-tranquilo)

Q: Can I change the color of news article links?
A: I set mine with File/Preferences/Documents, User links, and then
   made
sure that I'd checked User links in both Document and User columns
   in
   Presentation modes. (-Sue Sims)

Q: How do I change the font used in news articles?
A: Go to ALT-P (prefs) - documents - user fonts and colors - news
article body, double click to set the font.

Update to Opera 5.1 or edit the "mime.css" file in your styles
   directory (5.10).

Q: Is it possible to setup Opera to use an external newsreader for
   news:// clicks?
A: Not at this time. There is not a standard to cover this behavior by
   news readers.

Q: How can I read and reply to News while offline?
A: Currently, Opera is an online reader only. If you have just a touch
of technical skill and some patience, you can setup a program
called Hamster. It is a full NNTP (news), POP3 (email), and SMTP
(send email) program. You can set it up to download the Opera
groups, then connect with Hamster with Opera to read and reply to
news. Hamster will maintain a database of messages. It is a very
handy program since it can seamlessly handle dozens of news and
   email servers for you.
   Get it
   at:
   http://home.t-online.de/home/juergen.haible/english.htm

Q: How do I refresh a news group listing or check for new messages?
A: With the groups list open, press F5 (same as a web page
   reload).

You can also use the "autoreload" feature found on the Navigation
menu to automatically reload the page every 10-15 minutes.

Q: How do view subscribed newsgroups?
A: The left button in the newsgroups toolbar in the newsgroups window
   toggles between subscribed and all
   groups.

   http://www.opera.com/support/resources/newsgroup-sub.html

Q: If I remove the email client, can I still use Usenet?
A: You can read, but you can't post. The new compose portion is
   located in the email client.

Q: How do I subscribe to a newsgroup?
A: Go to News, select All newsgroups (button), so you'll see every
Opera newsgroup listed. You should see a little icon to the left of
each text line (n/g name). Click on the icon, and you should see a
little check mark. Once you see that, you've subscribed. (A second
click removes the check mark and unsub's you, as you'd expect.)
Once you've subscribed, you should be able to use the All button to
restrict the listing to the groups you've subscribed to. (-Nicholas
   Bodley)

Q: Font used for messages?
A: It is not possible to set the layout of mail and news messages from
the preferences. You need to edit a stylesheet file to do that.
It's really easy if you are not afraid to edit a simple text
   file.

Inside the Opera directory, there is a subdirectory 'styles' where
you can find the file 'mime.css'. Open this file in Notepad. Then
   search for this part:

   p
   {
           display:                block;
           white-space:            -pre-wrap;
           padding:                0;
           margin:                 1em 0;
           font-family:            'Courier New', monospace;
           font-size:              14px;
   }

Now you can set the font-family and the font-size by changing the
   values.
   (-Rijk van Geijtenbeek)

[ Page Display Issues ]
Q: What are all the settings on the Page Style preferences?
A: A great explanation can be
   found:
   http://www.opera.com/support/resources/documents.html#user-fontscolors

Q: What level of html, js, css, .etc does Opera support?
A: Full Opera 5 specifications can be
   found:
   http://www.opera.com/opera5/specs.html

Q: A website doesn't display correctly. What should I do?
A: View the page in Opera.
Right click on the page. Select "frame" and then "validate html".
You may be prompted if it is ok to submit a file, depending on your
security "show alert before submitting forms insecurely" setting.
Just select ok. The file will be uploaded to the W3C HTML
   validation tool
   at:

   http://www.searchengineworld.com/validator/

When the validation report is complete and it contains errors -
send that to the webmaster of the site. You can "Save" the page via
the File Menu Save (ALT-s) option or by pressing ALT-F3 to load it
   in your source code viewer.
Import it into your email program and send with a request to fix
their page (please be nice to these people - most will care about
   these issues).

If the report contains no error, submit a bug report to Opera
Software including the URL (address) where the problem
   occurred.

Q: Why don't links display the way I have them set in Link
   Presentation?
A: It is a complex combination of user settings and page settings. An
imperfect solution that works 95% of the time is to run your own
   user CSS file.

The most effective way, is to uncheck "Document CSS" in the
Document preferences and set your own Link presentation via that
   same preferences dialog.

You may also run a proxy filter to remove link commands from CSS
files and html documents. One that works is Proxomitron.
   http://proxomitron.cjb.net/

Q: Opera has a presentation mode?
A: Demo and tutorial at:

A demo at Sue Sims site:
   http://sue-sims.nu/opera/resources/media-demo.html

Q: A web page said I used an unauthorized link?
A: The site is looking for a http "referrer" header. Enable "Referrer
   logging" in Preferences (ALT-p) Privacy.

Q: A web page said I need to use another browser?
A: The site is expecting a browser identification Agent string for
some other browser. Press quick prefs (f12), and switch your
"Browser Identification" to the requested agent. Please switch it
back to Opera when finished with the site.

If this does not work, email the site and request that they
update their site to work with Opera.

Q: Where can I find info on Opera's specifications for web page
   authors?
A: http://www.opera.com/opera5/webdesigners.html

Q: What are the default document preferences?
A: The names have changed in Opera 6, but they are still the same
   function.

Q: How do I get larger fonts on web pages?
A: There are libraries full of this question. Our best answer is to
run your own CSS file. Just put a file in your Opera directory
called "my.css" and put the following in it:

   BODY {
     font: 12pt Verdana;
   }

   PRE, CODE, TT, KDB {
     font: 10pt "Courier new";
   }

After that, go to document preferences in Opera and click on the
browse button next to "user css" and select the file you just
created. Then check the check box under "document preferences,
presentations, User CSS" for both document mode and user mode.

Q: I installed java, but Opera doesn't show me that it is installed.
A: Are you sure you checked the box "Install Internationalized Java
Version" during install? The check box MUST be checked in order to
install Java. If Java was actually installed there would have been
another setup screen with info during install.

This install method may have changed a bit in Opera 6.

Q: Are there any programs that will minimize Opera to the tray?
A: Yes. Try the freeware Tray-It:
   http://www.teamcti.com/trayit (-Andreas Somogyi)

A: Just downloaded and install Acrobat Reader 4 from Adobe.com
   (free).

On Adobe's site, you download Acrobat Reader 4.05. (english
   filename: "ar405eng.exe").

After installing and then starting Opera 5, you'll need to goto
preferences, Plugins, and click on the "find plugins" button in the
upper right hand corner. If it is found, it should say it has
found "Acrobat Reader" and installed it.

After that, go find some pdf's and surf away.

   page:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/opera_plugins.htm

Q: How do I use the Updates.com http://updates.cnet.com service with
   Opera?
A: A new file type is required for this service to work. In Opera, go
to file/preferences/file types, and press the New button. Then for
MIME type, enter application/x-mss-scancfg and for File extentions
   enter rvp.
Select open with default application. Restart Opera.
You might need to select open with other application and enter the
path to catchup.exe. Apparently it's located in c:\program
files\cnet\catchup\program by default, but may be different
depending on where it was installed.

Q: How do I remove "bad" plugins?
A: You can do it from the Preferences list, or use the new Plugins
ignore file. The "plugin-ignore.ini" file lists plugins that Opera
should ignore. It includes the webhancer and comet cursor DLL
files by default. The opera6.ini will use the file in the "Plugin
ignore file" setting as the ignore file.

Q: How do I install Shockwave?
A: Download the Shockwave and Flash installer (for Netscape) from
   http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/ download/alternates/
Run shockwaveinstaller.exe, select your language, click OK and
then click next. Choose "Other Browser", select your Opera plugin
   directory (usually "C:\Program Files\Opera\Program\Plugins"), and
   click OK.
The Shockwave files will be installed.
The installer will tell you that you need to go online to finish
the installation. If the browser doesn't launch successfully,
ignore this, as the necessary files, "np32dsw.dll" and
"NPSWF32.dll" should already be present in Opera's plugin
   directory.

Pull down the "File" menu and select "Preferences" / "Plugins".
Click "Find plugins", and Opera will load the Shockwave/Flash
   plugin
   files.

[ Security and Privacy ]
Q: Is it possible to block sending an HTTP-REFERRER?
A: Yes, just uncheck Prefs-Privacy-"Enable referrer logging".

Q: What is "Enable referrer logging"?
A: Each time you connect to a site, a browser can send the "referring
url" to the next site. If you click on this
   link:

   http://www.webmasterworld.com

then WebmasterWorld.com would know you clicked on the link from
   this page.

When you disable "referrer logging", it stops the browser from
sending that string to the next site. If you have private pages on
the net, it is always good to disable referrer logging so that the
   urls are not exposed.

Q: What happens when "Enable automatic redirection" is turned on?
A: Many websites use redirects of one form or another to redirect you
to different locations. You almost always have to have this option
enabled for general surfing. When you'd want to turn it off is
under very technical and specific instances.

Q: What levels of ssl does Opera support?
A: ssl v2,v3, and TLS1. See Prefs-Security. The help files also have a
fair amount of info on using Opera with secure sites.

Q: Is it safe to "open file when transfer complete"?
A: Never open an untrusted program file on Windows. These files end in
.exe, .bat, .wsh, and .vbs. There may be more. Use the Open when
finished option only for nonexecuting files such as graphics (.jpg,
.gif) and videos (.ra, .ram, .mpg, .mpeg, .avi). You shouldn't even
open some doc files that contain embedded macros without knowing
   the source.

Q: How do I setup all the various security options?
A: Moved to stand alone page because of
   size:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/privacy_security.htm

Q: Can Opera be attacked by some of the other browser exploits?
A: Basically No. Many of the popular virus programs and exploits
attack the many holes in Internet Explorer and Netscape. Those are
often via Active X or Java Script problems. Even many of the Java
exploits do not work on Opera because they attack IE's off bred
Java and not the pure Java from Sun.

We know of no exploits or security holes in Opera that will put
your privacy or system security at risk.

Q: How do I delete my private data?
A: Under the File menu, "delete private data". see also, the cookies
section of the Opera User Faq.

Q: What is a certificate?
A: When you connect to a secure server there are two methods of
identifying yourself or a server. One is your personal
"certificate" and one is provided by the site. The certificates are
   used to authenticate the user.

A personal certificate or "key" is not sent over the net, it is
   only used to "decode" data.

Q: Opera 5.12 Security Alert
A: Javascript Cross Site security error in Opera 5.12.

[ Search Engine Searching ]
Q: Can I remove the Search field from the address bar?
A: Yes. Preferences, Toolbars, Progress Bar. Then uncheck the "show
search field and button on the dialog.

Q: Keep first search, and open a second search?
A: Shift click on the form submit button to open the second search
engine new window. Or, right click and duplicate the window and
perform the search from the second window. You can duplicate the
   current window with control-shift-N too.

Q: Can I configure the search engines used in the search function?
A: No. Please support the Opera user base by requesting they include
this as an option in future releases.

In the mean time, consider a
   bookmarklet:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/bookmarklets.htm

Q: I'm just wondering what this "source ID" is in the string sent to
   search engines?
A: In 5.01, the Google searches now go direct to the search
   engine.

Search engines can change their search string values. They also have
strict usage agreements that prohibit automated or programmed
queries. So a redirect service is used. In this case, Bfast.com.
Bfast is a division of Befree.com - a major website affiliate
program operator. Bfast maintains the urls, search strings, and has
agreements for usage with all of the search engines listed.

How do Bfast and the search engines know that Opera is an
authorized agent? Via a coded string "source ID" sent from Bfast to
the search engine. In this case, SourceID is for "opera", and the
"BFMID" identifies which search engine the request is to be sent
to. Commission Junction is used in the same manner for the
"Company" search. The "domain name" search goes to
domaindirect.com. The Goto.com search goes directly to Goto.com,
and is also coded with a BeFree affiliate id link.

Q: Tired of the Go button and Search field on the progress/address
   bar?
A: Don't we all, don't we all.
Just turn it off from prefs (ALT-P) under Toolbars by clicking off
"show search field" and "show go button". You can still use just a
single letter in an address bar to search. See the one key
   shortcuts on the Prefs-Search dialog.

Q: Can't I search from an address box?
A: Yes, use the one character command abbreviations. They differ
depending upon version. Check the Preferences - Search for the
   latest ids:
f find on page (opera 6)
   g Google
   a AllTheWeb
   o Opera Support
   d Domain name
   b Books
   c Company
   s Stock quote
   m Mp3/Audio
   i Image
   v Video

Q: Is there an easy solution to changing search engines?
A: Not really. You might try a service I have maintained since 1995
   (bookmark
   it):
   http://showcase.netins.net/web/phdss/searchbox.htm

Q: I want to use Google in a different language. How can I change the
   default Google used?
A: Google should auto detect your ip and redirect you to the
   appropriate "www.google.xyz" site.

You may also set your preferences on Google.com. (use the
preferences link at top) and you can select your native interface
   language.

Q: What is Super Search?
A: Try it. It opens two windows side-by-side with a search conducted
   on Fast/AllTheWeb and Google.

Q: tip: bookmark search engine searches?
A: You can bookmark the full url to the search or you can bookmark the
Opera command line syntax too. Just use the same command string for
the url. For example, to search for Opera skins, use the url:

   g Opera browser skins

Q: Is there a shortcut for the new "inline find"?
A: Not that we know about. It is only available from the Edit
   menu.

If you put only that search ("find in page") on the personal
toolbar, then shift-f7 will focus on the form box.

Also, if you use the "inline find" from the "edit" menu, it will
turn on the address bar search box. (easier tried than described -
   try it).

Q: Search: How do I search the page from the address bar?
A: Use the new "f" command. To find "fun stuff" on the current page,
   use:

   f fun stuff

Q: Is there a google toolbar for Opera?
A: Not at the moment. You can add a custom panel search
   though:

   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/v6/googlepanel.htm

Q: Google produces no results?
A: Go to your search preferences (alt-p/search) and select any number
of results from the drop down.

[ Skins ]
Q: Where can I find graphics to use for skin entities?
A: Moved to a stand alone pages because of
   size:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/skins/
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/skins/opera_skins.htm

Q: What are Skins?
A: Skins are geek jargon for the ability of users to customize
software with a users own look. Some software such as the famous
WinAmp, allow you to completely change the look and feel through
   downloadable skin files.

Opera allows you to change the graphics used for the MDI background
space, button bar, Hotlist button bar, window bar, main menu bar,
Hotlist background, personal toolbar background, and transfer
   window button bar.

Q: How do I change a skin file?
A: You can change the skin file used by right clicking on a graphic
and selecting "use image as", then "set as skin foreground" (button
bars), or "Set as skin background" (mdi application space
   background).

You may also change the skin graphic files by going to the Windows
preferences where there are two new options for the skin
   files.

In Opera 6, these are located on the preferences - Browser Look
   dialog.

Q: How do I set a desktop background from a graphic?
A: Not related to skins, but on the same right click menu. Right click
on a graphic, then select, "use image as", and then "desktop
   background".

Q: How do I remove a skin graphic?
A: You can do so from Prefs (ALT-P) under the Browser Look option in
Opera 6. Or, you can right click then select Background, then Use
   Image As, and finally, Remove.

Q: Can I prevent the background from shifting right?
A: Add the following to your [User Prefs] section of the
   opera6.ini.

   Align Background Skin=1

   (-Rijk van Geijtenbeek)

Q: Can I install windows wallpaper?
A: Yes. Right click on a graphic, then select Use Image As, and then
   select Desktop
   Wallpaper.

Q: How do I install new skins?
A: Opera Skin
   Tutorial:

Q: Are button sets part of Opera skins?
A: No, but that doesn't mean you can't change
   them:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/buttons/

Q: Quick Skin tip for local file surfing?
A: If you are using an image viewer such as Acdsee to view graphics,
just drag and drop the image on opera. Then right click and do the
   "use image as" thing.

Q: Where are skins stored?
A: In the \Opera\Skin directory. When you right click and "use image
as" to set a skin file, the file is copied to the skin directory.
   Those can build up.

[ Transfers ]
Q: How do I reopen the Transfer Window?
A: Control-Alt-T
   or
Window menu on the main menu bar and then Special, and finally
   Transfer.

Q: How long is the file transfer window file records kept?
A: 48 hours. Or if using 5.10 or higher, under the [TransferWindow]
   section of the opera6.ini, add:

   LogEntryDaysToLive =

Q: How do I resume a download?
A: Open the transfer window if not open (Window-Special-Transfer).
Then find the file you wish to restart, right click and click on
   transfer.

In Opera 6, highlight the file on the Transfer window, and then
   just click on Resume.

Q: How do I change the # of days that Opera stores download data?
A: Under [TransferWindow] section in opera6.ini
   add:

   LogEntryDaysToLive =22

Where 22 is the number of days you wish to save the data
   (-Trond).

Q: I have to double click on form file upload submit buttons!?
A: A minor annoyance in Opera 5 (fixed in Opera 6), but it is an
annoyance non-the-less. However, it barely rates a 1 on the
annoyance scale. Ok ok, it's a 2 since you have to double click...

Q: Is there any way I can set Opera 5/6 to auto-download files.
A: Goto Prefs, Files Types and find the type of file you wish to
download automatically, and click on edit. Click on "save to disk"
and then "do not ask by save directly to". Then set the path of
where you wish to save the file too.

Q: Does Opera support file uploading?
A: Yes, completely. Try it by right clicking a page and selecting,
Frame-Validate page. That uploads the current page to the w3c.

Q: How do I clear all entries in the file transfer window?
A: In opera v5.10 - v6, file/delete private data - uncheck all boxes
except "clear transfer history". Keep in mind that all open
windows will close. Or, you can delete the file "download.dat" in
   your opera directory.

You can add this line to your opera6.ini file, [transferwindow]
   section.

   LogEntryDaysToLive=10
   (any number you choose -Tranquilo)

Q: What is "show outside of Opera" and "Activate on Transfer"?
A: The Show outside of Opera option on the transfer window, puts the
transfer window in it's own window. You can then minimize the
window. The time remaining will show in the title of the
   button.

The window will be brought to the front of the other windows (or
main window) when a transfer is initiated. The main use is when you
are downloading large numbers of files and don't want to be
intererupted by the window jumping to the front. If you have set
"auto download and save" file types, you may want to keep this
option checked as much of the time as possible (to avoid missing
   downloads).

Q: What download managers work with Opera?
A: GoZilla, and
   GetRight.
   http://www.gozilla.com
   http://www.getright.com/opera.html

Be aware that these programs are accused of being "spyware" in
that they possibly record your downloads and transmit the names to
their respective servers. There may also be advertising displays in
   the products that are "spyware".

Q: Why does a binary file display to the screen instead of asking to
   be downloaded?
A: Opera can determine what to do with a file from either it's file
extension (such as .jpg or .gif) or from it's "mime type". Mime
types are sent as part of the "http header" when any file request
   is processed by a webserver.

Sometimes those two bits of info do not match. (eg: you click on a .jpg
and it tells Opera that it is a html file). So a conflict exists
and Opera must guess which one is right.

You can switch between those two actions on the File Types
preferences. On the dialog there is a radio box at top with two
actions. Switch them and the file should download ok.

If it doesn't, you may have to associate the file with a mime
type yourself by creating a new Mime-Type. Doing that is pretty
involved for the novice. See the help file.

If it is a one time problem, you can download the file into a
window and then right click and save the file to disk and it should
   work ok.

You may also right click on the link and select "save file as". It
will work for most types other than javascript links.

Q: What is Absolute FTP Path?
A: Some ftp servers automatically put you into your home directory
when you login with your user name and password. Toggle this option
if you find this behavior annoying.

[ Tweaks and Tips ]
Q: Can I change the timeout values on the auto window reload?
A: Add the following to the user prefs section of your ini:
   Auto Window Timeout Presets=5,15,30,60,120,300,900,1800

Where the numbers indicate time before reload.

This option is limited to the first 15 entries, and they
will appear on the right-click "reload every..." menu in
   the
same order they were entered into the opera6.ini
   file.

Additionally, you cannot enter a time greater than 99 minutes,
   99 seconds from the right-click/reload every/customize
   menu,
and only the most recently entered time will
   "stick".
Persistent changes must be done from the opera6.ini file.

Q: Can I use my own splash screen?
A: Add replace the path to your splash screen in the User Prefs
section of opera6.ini in the following line (add if
   needed):

   Splash
   image=F:\Opera\splash.gif

   Related:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/splash.htm

Q: How can I open multiple links that are on the current page?
A: Use Control-J to show all links on the page.
   Article on using
   Control-J:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/controlj.htm

Q: How can I change the http accept headers?
A: Via and undocumented option in the opera6.ini. Add or edit the
   following:

   [ADV USER PREFS]
   Http Accept=text/html, image/png, image/jpeg, image/gif,
   image/x-xbitmap, */*

Where the accept string is what you wish to tell a server.

Q: What DDE Topics does Opera support?
A: The only officially endorsed DDE Topic is OpenURL:

   Method: Request
   Topic: WWW_OpenURL
Message: "%1" (or the actual URL)
   App name: Opera

However, many of the standard Netscape DDE Topics will work (potluck).

Q: Can I view ALT tags on mouse over popups instead of TITLE
   attributes?
A: If you are running a proxy filter such as Proxomitron, a web page
   filter can substitute:

Name = "Alt to Title (Edit)"
   Active = TRUE
   Limit = 256
   Match = "alt=\"\1\""
   Replace = "alt=\"\1\" title=\"\1\""

   (-Jor)

Now alt tags will show on mouse over.

Q: How do I save a page as text instead of html?
A: On the "save as" file dialog (file:save as), there is a drop down
   "save
as type". One of the options is to save as text instead of
   html.
   Works good.

Q: Can I configure the validation url?
A: Yes, via the ini. Add the following to your ini and set the URL= to
where you want the file uploaded. This can be good for those with
certain types of web interfaces to their websites.

   [User Prefs]
   Validation
   URL=http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/validator/validate.cgi
   Validation Form Element=uploaded_file
   (-Peter Karlsson)

Q: How do I bookmark a windows storage file of various urls?
A: Moved response to a stand alone
   page:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/winfile_bookmarking.htm

Q: The Obligatory Tip List?
A: Shift-Click a link into a new window.
Shift-Control-Click a link into the background.
Text too small? Press the plus key on the numeric keypad.
   Don't like the next/back buttons? Press x and z.
Run into an over eager CSS page? Press control-G, or press the
print preview icon, or turn off document css from the prefs-page
   style dialog.
Like to see more of the bookmark titles from the menu drop down?
Use the Prefs-Hotlist dialog to increase the menu width.
   Hotlist is on F4.
Help, I'm trapped in full screen presentation mode and I can't get
out! (hit f11 again or right click or spaz out on Escape).
So, you've seen all the images on a site? Press g to toggle
graphics on/off/loaded to speed up the show.
Save your eyes. Put the progress bar at the bottom where it
belongs. (menu - view - progress - bottom).
Need a functional full screen mode? Control F7, then Control
   F8.
Hey, what's Wap? try it. http://wap.google.com
Find that email? Try it. Right click on an email folder and select
find - pretty cool for a 'hidden' feature.
Forms are so redundant that they are boring you? Fill in the
personal info in Prefs-Personal Info, then right click on the form
and spit out your favorite entry.
Email filter is another nifty dialog. It's hidden on the Email menu
of the main menu bar - (who knew?).
Display those headers! Opera 5.1 allows you to view post and email
headers. Look in the info bar at the top of the email/post for the
   "display headers" link (well duh).

Q: How do I disable popups?
A: In Opera 6, press F12 and select one of the first 3 options.

Q: Why does Opera ignore changes I make in the opera6.ini file?
A: Opera rewrites the file when you close Opera. Thus, you can not
edit the file while Opera is running.

Q: What are the command line switches?
A: Moved to stand alone
   page/article:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/command_line_switches.htm

Q: So you know all the tips of the day? Try this great trick.
A: After using Opera for a while, the Tip of the day function (Help -
Tip of the day... in Windows) will become less useful. Try
   this:
(moved to it's own page because of
   size):
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/opera-tip-of-the-day.htm

Q: When I save a file, the links no longer work because they are
   relative urls. Fixable?
A: The menu selection:

File, Save with images as does that with the targets of all links.

It also saves all referenced image files. (Note that it saves
them in the same folder in which you save the HTML file, not in a
new sub-folder; so you may need to make use of the Create New
Folder button in the save dialog box.)

If you want to save just the HTML source, you can edit the saved
file and add a <BASE> tag. It should be in the <HEAD>
section (you can put it immediately after that tag), and it looks
   like this:

   <BASE HREF="http://put.the.URL/of/the/page/itself.here">

to make all relative URLs in the document relative to the address
specified in the tag, rather than to the location of the source
   file.

If there is already a <BASE> tag, see if it uses an
absolute URL, or a relative URL. If it's relative, figure out the
corresponding absolute URL and substitute it; if it's absolute, the
   page should work without changes.

Of course, you'd need to do this right away, while you still have
the original URL at hand in Opera. I find it easiest to use View,
Source (which brings up the cached page directly in a text editor),
make the edit right then and there, then save the result wherever I
   want to keep it. (-Coises)

Q: How do I speed up my Opera startup or shutdown?
A: Aside from reducing the cache size and history sizes, you can try
reducing the number of days that urls are marked visited. If you
visit a large number of pages, you can drastically reduce your
startup time by doing this simple item:

Visit Prefs-Documents (Fonts and Colors in Opera 6), and click on
link presentation. Then reduce the number of days that links are
marked visited. Opera stores visited url data in its "vlink.dat"
directory. If that file gets too large, it can really slow down
Opera startup and shut down. By reducing the number of days marked
visited, you are reducing the number of urls in that file. Clear
your cache, then exit and restart after changing that setting.

Q: Need more screen real estate?
A: Want a few more pixels to work with? You can adjust your Opera
default position on the screen by editing the [Windows] section of
   your opera6.ini file.
The trick is to move the top border upwards so that the title bar
floats off the screen a bit. Not enough to completely cover the
min, max, and close buttons, but just enough to give you back 15 to
20 pixels. Under the windows section, you'll find some lines
   similar
   too:

   [Window]
   FullScreen=0
   LEFT=-5
   TOP=-18
   Right=1165
   Bottom=826

The left and top are the borders of Opera. Using a negative number
will slide the startup position upward. In the example, I have mine
slid up 18 pixels off the top, and 5 off to the left. That is
enough to still see the window buttons and to cover the left border
of Opera. I've done the same with the right border as well.

Q: Is there a way to create a shortcut from the desktop to a web site?
A: Copy the link url by right clicking on it and selecting "copy link
   address" or "copy document address".
Right-click the Windows desktop to bring up the context menu. Select "New
   Shortcut".
Paste the URL (CTRL-v) into the "Command Line" input box.
(Note: make sure Opera is set as the Default Browser on your system
   for this to work)

Or try this method from Phil Burns:
Shortcuts as made by IE on the desktop appear to be simple plain text
files with the extension '.url' Looking at the content they are
   similar to ini files:

   ------
   [DEFAULT]
   BASEURL=http://www.opera.com/

   [InternetShortcut]
   URL=http://www.opera.com/
   Modified=809E6A7E33D0C001CA

On testing I find I can remove all lines except the following and
it will still open the page in
   Opera.

   [InternetShortcut]
   URL=http://www.opera.com/

So to conclude, you could keep a text file on your desktop with
the line [InternetShortcut] in it. You can then right click any
page in Opera, select 'Copy Address', paste it into the text file,
and save it as 'Whatever you like.url'

Q: Change title?
A: In your opera6.ini, add "title=xyx" under [User Prefs]. Where xyz
   is your desired title.

Q: Is there a list of the opera6.ini settings?
A: http://www.opera.com/opera5/operaini.html

Q: Where can I download an older version of Opera?
A: http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/www/clients/opera/

Q: Quick Compose?
A: Control-E

Q: Fast Maximize, Minimize, and Restore?
A: Left out of the keyboard help file are the following keyboard
   commands:

   Restore All Windows: shift-control-3
   Minimize All Windows: shift-control-4
   Maximize All Windows: shift-control-5

Q: Any warning that links are going to open in new windows?
A: From Samuli
   Lintula:
   http://www.samulilintula.net/netti/opera/

Usually it's very annoying when a link opens in a new window. Besides
disabling this behavior (File, Preferences, Windows, Allow
documents to create new windows), you can also make the link warn
yourself. For this you need some user
   CSS:

   a[target="_blank"]:after
   {
   background-color : white !important;
   border : 2px solid black !important;
   content : "W" ;
   color : black !important;
   font-weight : bolder;
   font-size : bigger ;
   text-decoration : blink ;
   }

   ----
To make and use a user-CSS:

   1. Open a text-editor, e.g. Notepad.
   2. Copy the lines above to the text-editor, and save the file as
   warning.ini
   3. File, Preferences, Documents. Enable user CSS for both modes
and browse for warning.ini in the box at the bottom-left
   corner.
   4. Ok.

Q: How do I move Up one directory?
A: Control-Backspace.
Opera 6 has a mouse gesture, Up then Left.

Q: How can I keep a "hot bookmark" up at the top of the list?
A: When I find an especially-good bookmark that I don't want to bury
down in the alphabetical listing, I edit its title before saving
it. I simply put a space code to the left of the first character in
the title. Greater emphasis uses two space codes. This scheme has
minimal side-effects; essentially, none. Spaces sort at the top of
   the list. (-Nicholas Bodley)

Q: Can I disable preferences?
A: Create a section in your opera6.ini as follows:
   [Menu Prefs Settings]
Under this heading place the following Preferences enable/disable
   lines:
If all are disabled, then the prefs menu is
   disabled.
   Connections=
   Default=
   Font=
   Mail=
   Viewer=
   Cache=
   Hotlist=
   Language=
   Multimedia=
   News=
   Paths=
   Personal=
   Plugins=
   Privacy=
   Security=
   Sound=
   Start=
   Button=
   Windows=
Set to 1 to enable, or 0 to disable.

Q: What "colors" does Opera support?
A: HTML4:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/operacolors.htm

Q: How do I view a disk directory?
A: To access local hard drive files, just type C: into a browser
window. You may also view all available drives
   with
   opera:drives.

Q: Can I turn off the email, news, and instant messenger client?
A: No need to edit the ini any longer with Opera 6!
There is now and option located in preferences under Programs and
   Paths.

Q: How can I tell which version I am running or the build number?
A: To see which version of Opera you are running, use the About
command from the Opera main menu Help menu. It will also tell you
what files and paths are currently in use.

Q: Can I change the color of the unviewed titles on the window bar?
A: After you load a page, Opera changes the color of the Window bar
text. If you have seen the window, it is one color, and if you
haven't it is another color. If you want to change the "unread"
color, add the following section onto the end of your
   opera6.ini:

   [Winbar Attention]
   Red=200
   Green=10
   Blue=28

The numbers are standard decimal numbers with the range from 0 to
   255. Mix the color numbers just like paint. This would be
   white:

   Red=255
   Green=255
   Blue=255

   This would be black:
   Red=0
   Green=0
   Blue=0

   And this would be yellow:
   Red=255
   Green=255
   Blue=0

Q: How do I see the task bar in fullscreen mode?
A: Add this to your [User Prefs] section of the
   opera6.ini:
   FullScreenCoverTaskbar=0

Q: How do I save sessions and pickup where I left off?
A: Do a quick Windows - Save Windows and you are set.

   Related: .win file
   bookmarking:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/winfile_bookmarking.htm

Q: Will Opera remember my form values?
A: Opera does have a limited form of this capability builtin. To
enable, fill in some of the fields in preferences (ALT-P), personal
information. Also enable auto completion under Preferences
accessibility. Now all you do is type the first letter in a webpage
form box and Opera will present a drop down with the options. Not
perfect, but good for those that use the same userid on different
   websites.

Q: How do I set my start page?
A: Moved to stand alone page because of
   size:
   http://www.searchengineworld.com/opera/start_page.htm

Q: New Window, and/or Home page?
A: All windows closed.
   Double click on work space.
   Double click again.
Or double click on window bar.

Q: Need more screen real estate with the open Hotlist?
A: Undock the Hotlist. Then get used to accessing it with
   control-tab.
It helps if you turn off the Hotlist Preferences option to
   "include hotlist when tiling".

Q: How can I change the word [image] when graphics are off?
A: An "IMAGE" hack for no-graphics mode: I managed to remove the word
"IMAGE" from unlabelled graphics objects by downloading the
ow512_932en.lng language file and editing string 20078 to "".
   (-Paul Harvey)

Q: Does Opera support Gzip encoding?
A: Yes. It may help with specific servers to add the following line to
   your opera6.ini User Prefs section:

   Accept-Encoding: deflate, gzip, x-gzip, identity, *;q=0

Q: How do I get back an incorrectly typed url?
A: Focus on the address bar and press ESCape.

Q: I hear there is an Auto-Proxy config?
A: Yes. Used with PAC
   files.
   http://home.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/2.0/relnotes/demo/proxy-live.html

Q: Tips: from Frode Gill
A: From: Frode Gill
   Subject: Tips for 6.0-users
   Date: 13 Nov 2001 16:19:07 GMT

A few tips that are not listed in the changelogs, and that I
   find useful:

   Space            =PgDown
   Shift+Space =PgUp
   Ctrl+Shift+Space =Home
(Ctrl+Space was already taken, so it will open your pre-set
   homepage
instead of go to the End...) (Only available when you have not used
spatial navigation (like 'q' and 'a') to select a link)

.win savefiles (as used in Window-Save window setup...) will
remember the scrollbar-position (so scroll down below those
   annoying ads before saving
   :-)

With 'reuse windows' checked, you will still be able to open things
in new windows if you press Shift (with a very few exceptions).
Press Ctrl+Shift to open the new window in the
   background.

Minimize/Maximize mouse-gestures will work on anything with a
minimize/maximize-icon. Window Close mouse-gesture will work on
anything with a Window Close icon. (those 3 icons in the upper
right of most windows, if you don't understand what I'm talking
   about)

Double-click on a word to select it (and send it to transaltion etc). Click
one more time to select the sentense, and one more time to select
the paragraph. Double-click on a number, and you can send it to a
   currency translator.

Q: Tip: close window with mouse from window bar like MIRC.
A: Shift click on the window bar button.

Q: Tip: Proxy special features
A: Opera uses a new "Options" request for a proxy the first time it
communicates with it. If you per chance have a proxy that doesn't
understand it, you can override this behavior by adding the
   following to your Opera6.ini:

   [Adv User Prefs]
   Disable HTTP OPTIONS requests=1

Q: Tip: Currency Conversion!
A: Highlight a number and right click. "currency conversion" shows up
as an option on the context menu! Genius.

Q: Tip: Open window in background from F2.
A: Ctrl-shift-enter/click can be used with f2 to open a window in
   the
   background.

Ctrl-shift-enter/click shift-enter/click in the address bar can open windows in the
   background or foreground, respectively. (-tranquilo)

Q: Tip: Hidden features list v6?
A: We'll update this as we find them.

Mouse gesture: up then left. Does same as
   control-backspace.

Ctrl-shift-enter/click can be used with f2 to open a window in the
   background.

Ctrl-shift-enter/click shift-enter/click in the address bar can open windows in the
   background or foreground, respectively.

Shift-Click a window bar button to close that window.

Q: Why on earth would anybody have 40 browser windows open? (-JD)
A: Because they hadn't yet opened browser windows 41, 42, 43, etc.
Give the guy a chance to get all his browser windows open.

   As for a serious answer:

   1) Its great to go to a number of news sites and ctrl-shift-click
a bunch of pages off the front page. Then while they load go to
another news site and do the same. Once all the pages are open go
back and read the ones that have finished loading.

   2) Time to go to sleep and still haven't read everything. No
problem. Opera will save all the windows and open them all when you
   start Opera again.

   3) Technical doc. Got lots of pages one is reading for reference
from help sites, on-line doc, etc.

I sometimes have 30,40,50 windows open at once. I like
   it.
   (-Randall Parker)

Q: Form box life saver.
A: So you accidently erased that message in the multi-line text box?

Did you know that there is an undo feature available in text
   areas? It's even a multi-level undo.

Just press Control-Z to step back through your changes. note: there
is not a "redo" function. Once you undo changes, there is no way to
change them back to the original.

Q: Opera Show (presentation mode)
A: The current opera.com style sheets are not very Operashow
compatible. That is the least of their problems. Be that as it may,
if you do want to make an Operashow web site where the pages
themselves are presentations (unlikely but nevermind), you need to
   do this:

   @media projection {
    /*1*/  all-that-websiteidentity-and-navigational-gunk
   {display:none;}
    /*2*/  h1, h2  {page-break-before: always;}
    /*3*/  h1 + h2 {page-break-before: avoid;}
   }

/*1*/: Typical web pages are overworked, and you don't want that when
you present an article or a presentation
/*2*/ In most cases headlines are the natural subdividers in a
presentation. In other cases it may be DIVs (usually) or something
   else.
/*3*/ If you split on H1 and H2, you don't want to split on H2s
immediately following H1s, otherwise those H1s will be
   orphans.

(- Jonny Axelsson, Documentation, Opera Software)

Q: Fullscreen mode tip
A: Here's a great tip submitted by Nadine Swindells:

Start with the taskbar on in fullscreen mode. You can turn on the
task bar in full screen (f11) two ways. You can either use the
autohide feature of the task bar, or edit your Opera6.ini file and
   add the following under [User
   Prefs]:

   FullScreenCoverTaskbar=0

That will turn on the task bar in fullscreen all the time.

   The Trick:
Now when you are in fullscreen mode with the taskbar on, right
click on the Opera icon and select "maximize". You are now
presented with a screen that has Opera maximized without
   toolbars.

You can also get the 'system menu' by pressing alt+spacebar and
   then selecting maximize.

   Pretty nifty. Thanks Nadine.

Q: How do I launch a url from desktop with only one window?
A: Add the /nowin switch to the properties of the shortcut.

[ Opera 6 User Interface ]
Q: How do I turn off the Opera splash screen when it starts?
A: Edit your opera6.ini and add the following in the [User Prefs]
   section:
   show splash screen=0

You may also start Opera from the command line with the switch
   /noSplashScreen

Q: How can I remove the 576:302 numbers from the start of the title?
A: Go to File -Preferences-Windows and uncheck "Show Window Size"
   (-Ken Knox)

Q: Can I change the window bar color for the "page loaded" color?
A: Add a new opera6.ini section:

   [Winbar Attention]
   Red=200
   Green=10
   Blue=28

Change the red, green, blue values to taste. (valid values are from 0
   to 255).

Q: What is "Create Linked Window"
A: Try it. It creates a new window. Now all the links from the first
window will display in the linked window instead. Handy for search
   engine results pages.

Q: Can I have two different configurations for two different users?
A: Moved to stand alone page because of
   size:

Q: In Opera 3.x it was easy to disable the menu-bar (ctrl-f11). Is
   this possible in Opera 5/6?
A: No. The only work around is to use full screen mode then:

Turn on scroll bars (ctrl-f7) so that you can actually scroll the
page (mouse scrolling, what a concept).

Turn on the progress bar so you know if opera is doing something
   with ctrl-f8.

Enable the icon toolbar by pressing ALT, then release, then press
cursor down, then navigate to the right to the view menu, find
Button Bar, then turn it on.

Enable the window bar (alt release, crsr down, then use the cursor
keys to navigate over to "view", then down, and enable the "window
   bar" if you like.

Each time you move a window, or tile, or cascade, or tab to another
window, you'll have to redo all of the above steps.

Please support your fellow Opera users by requesting that Opera
return to the full screen mode found in Opera 3.x. There were a
couple of problems with the system in 3.x, but nothing on the scale
of the problems Opera 5 fullscreen mode has caused.

Q: Is there a way I can set the new MDI window size?
A: Yes, by editing the [User Prefs] opera6.ini and adding:

   NewWinSize = 640,480
The two numbers are height and width in pixels. The default is
-1,-1 which sets to the windows default itself. If you set the size
to large, you may be in danger of creating windows that are "under"
the bottom border. Using the preferences option under "windows:show
window size" can be helpful to determine your favorite settings.

Q: How do I open a link underneath with the keyboard?
A: Shift-Control-space

Q: How do I make heads or tails of the Prefs "Page Style" dialog?
A: Opera has a pretty good page on the
   subject:
   http://www.opera.com/support/resources/documents.html

Q: Does Opera have server name completion?
A: Yes. Go to Prefs, Connections, and click on the "server name
completion" button. Be sure to uncheck the "look for local network
   machine" to speed it up.

Q: Random links seem to drop out of the "visited" register?
A: Are these password protected pages? In which case it isn't a bug,
but a (security) feature so that no one can use the history file as
a back door. Those pages are selectively removed from the history
file. (Jonny Axelsson, Documentation, Opera Software)

Also, goto to Prefs, Documents, and click on Link Presentation, and
set you Mark visited links to shorter or longer as needed. Shorter
   reduces disk space.

Q: Does Opera Support Auto filling out of web forms?
A: Opera does have this capability builtin. To enable, fill in some of
   the
fields in preferences (ALT-P), personal information. Also enable auto
completion under Preferences accessibility. Now all you do is type
the first letter in a webpage form box and Opera will present a
drop down with the options. Not perfect, but good for those that
use the same userid on different websites.

Q: How do I move the progress bar, window bar, or status bar from top
   to bottom or vice versa?
A: Two ways:
On the View menu of the main menu bar at top, mouse down through
the options and you'll see top and bottom next to the progress,
   status, and windows bars.

You may also right click on any of the bars to get a mini popup
menu with top or bottom options on them.

Q: Is there any way to get URI's to show in Opera global history list?
A: The layout of the history window is set by the history.css style
sheet. Just add some line like this:
   td.address a:after {content: " (" attr(href) ") "} (Jonny Axelsson
   Documentation, Opera Software)

Q: How do I change the web page document font size with the keyboard?
A: You could try the magnification option, it should be on the right
side of each window on the progress bar or if you have disabled it,
   re-enable from Prefs-Toolbars-Show Zoom.

+ and - on the numeric keypad zoom up and down by 10%, 0 and 9
zoom up and down by 10%, 7 and 8 zoom up and down by 100%, * on the
keypad and 6 restores the default zoom. (-tranquilo)

Q: How do I get the progress bar back to the top in 5.1/6?
A: You can set the preferences, "show progress inside of url bar" and
then move the url address bar to the top. If you don't "show
progress inside of url bar", then you will not be able to move the
   progress popup to the top.

Q: How do I get Opera to open just one window at a time?
A: Prefs-Windows-Browser Windows-Reuse existing windows.

[ Upgrade & Installation Issues ]
Q: Reg problems upgrading from Opera 5?
A: If you installed opera in a new directory, you will need to copy
OUsr500.dat to the directory and rename it as OUsr600.dat
That will update your registration! (-Richard Grevers)

Or if you still have problems, try "The procedure":

   1) Locate the e-mail you received the registration code in, and
note date that you purchased Opera 5x, along with the registration
   code
   2) Write register@opera.com and include both the date of the
purchase of Opera 5, and the registration number.
   3) Wait for a response.
   (-Sue Sims)

Q: Opera 6 Upgrading.
A: So far, the only upgrade issues about Opera 6 have been
registration key related. You may need to request a registration
   key from Opera Software.

Other than that, we know of no issues affecting upgrading at this
   time. It is safe.

[ Annoyances ]
Q: Focus Issues
A: Pressing submit loses focus on the form element.

When you open the Hotlist the first time, the back/next buttons
gray out. Focus on the page and they come back.

Q: Kb navigation
A: Keyboard navigation is broken on the hotlist if the email client is
disabled (file/prefs/programs and paths/opera clients). This is a
   holdover from 5.10.

Cannot switch to another tab with ctrl-tab.

With the 2 paned bookmark tab, I cannot tab from the top to the
bottom pane, or the reverse. The "find" box is also off
   limits.

Hopefully this will be fixed someday. (-tranquilo)

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: Printing problems.
A: There is a problem when printing page when percentages are set. Not
sure we understand the complete scope of the problem yet. (just be
aware that it exists and that printing with Opera 6 is dicey at
   best).

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: frames - scrollbars forced.
A: When viewing a page with frames, the scrollbars appear even though
I have them turned off in preferences. Ctrl-f7 will not turn them
   off in this instance. (-tranquilo)

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: FTP server causing crash?
A: Switching directories to the parent directory when using certain
types of FTP servers can cause a crash. (first and only known
   reproducible crash)

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: Full screen mode escape bug.
A: If you open a new window with shift click in presentation mode
(full screen), and immediately hit ESCape to stop loading, Opera
   comes out of presentation mode.

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: Disconnect from net when closing Opera.
A: The disconnect from the net on close Opera doesn't work in Beta 1.

Q: Show only cached images bug lives!
A: "Show only cached images" mode still loads background images on the
first visit to a page. Workaround is to always use a user style
sheet, but this becomes problematic because of the lack of multiple
   user style sheets. (-tranquilo)

   * not fixed in 6.0 final.

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: Meta Refresh.
A: Standards state that the meta refresh element should only exist
inside of the head section of a document.

However, street html says differently. There are default html editors
that stick the meta refresh any where before or after the head
section and rely on other browsers reading it. It is very
   common.

   --- From OS:
The problem with 'META refresh' without surrounding HEAD tags,
   where the
META redirecting was ignored (even for some perfectly valid
   pages:
remember that the tags for the HEAD element are optional...) will
   be
solved in the next beta/final. (-Rijk van Geijtenbeek)
   --

Q: Unfeatures
A: >Is there a list of discontinued features anywhere? o Window
home page. You no longer can set a local 'window homepage'.
o Can't apply prefs to all open windows.
o Graphics or user mode button on progress bar when progress
   inside of address bar.
o window list (alt-w) that lists more than 9 windows.
o Goto direct address button removed (f2).
o Copy button has been removed.

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: Tip: Resources
A: From Trond one of Opera 6's core programmers:

For those running out of resources on win9x systems, try
   this:

   1. Go to preferences->History and cache.
   2. Uncheck / disable automatic RAM cache
   3. Set both Cache documents and Cache images to 10000 KB and make
   sure they're checked.

If you still run into problems, try lowering the "Cache images"
value to 8000, then 5000 if problem persists.

Next version should solve this though.

   (-Trond)

Q: Right click on images doesn't show "save image as" sometimes.
A: The "Image" menu can only pop up when the Image is in the
foreground (highest layer), not in the background. The same happens
when the Image is a background image in a <td>.

The browser can not know, that you are not interested in the
content of the cell but in the (background) decoration. (-Roland
   Reck)

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: The Quick Preferences, Popup window Option
   doesn't work?
A: Not when accessed from the File menu, but it does when accessed via
   the F12 shortcut menu.

It's only an issue when the main Opera window is small enough to
force the foldout from 'File/Quick Preferences' to go *up* instead
of down. In that case, the popup settings on top are over the
normal menu, and don't work. (-Rijk)

Q: Mouse over forms flashes pointer?
A: Tis the way it is. We don't think that will be changed.

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: Dragging folders to bookmarks doesn't work.
A: There are a few other drag and drop problems too.

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: Double click menu bar icon.
A: Won't close window of a maximized mdi document window.

Q: Fixed in 6.0 final: External email client?
A: There have been complaints that if you check "Use default Email
client on computer" that it doesn't work....as is my experience.
However, if you check "Use specific email client" with the
appropriate email client including it's appropriate paths and
following parameters, it works fine on my machine. (-Ken Knox)

Q: Why can't I dock the hotlist in SDI mode?
A: Consider the consequences if hotlist were dockable in SDI. For
instance if you were to dock the hotlist in SDI, where would it
have to dock? In one or all SDI-windows? If it were to dock into
one SDI window, the hotlist might get 'lost' when you've got a lot
of windows open and wouldn't be available to all windows when
needed. If it were to dock into all SDI-windows it would look a lot
more like IE and NN, but as said before, it wasn't possible due to
   programming reasons. (-Mark Schenk)

Q: bug: Control-j
A: Copy as Text, or Copy as HTML no longer work.

Q: bug: status bar url display
A: z.cgi?foo=1&;car=ford&;cute=1

The first &; (in the example the one before "car") is not shown in
the statusbar when mousing over the link. (the link does show
   correctly in the tooltip).

Q: bug: Print Preview
A: In Opera 6.0 Final, many people are reporting that using print
preview crashes Opera (so don't do that).

Q: Bug: focus
A: If "use screen reader menus" is turned on, and you alt-tab between
Opera and another application - when you come back, you lose on the
page to focus on the menu. Turn off "use screen reader menus" to
   overcome.

Q: bug: Kiosk mode
A: It appears that Kiosk mode in Opera 6 final does not work at all.
There is a focus issue. You can emulate it to some degree by using
   other command line switches.
